Just got off the phone w/ B&H am more confused than before I called.... My old Sigma gave up the ghost yesterday, soo thought I'd bite the bullet n get a Good speedlight... Now I wanted the ability to remotely (with out wires) use a speedlight off camera... BnH said with out a $1000.00, su800 transmitter it can't be done... Really?? Ok so if thats true, Then Will some one give me advice on the SB700 vs SB910 besides the $300 diff.... As long as I'm gonna buy an expensive unit, I'd love the ability to shoot fast moving horses in dark arenas, (bucking stock) and I'd like to shoot fast frames, if thats possible... AND something idiot proff ??? IE NO Math involved in figureing out distance/ strength bla bla bla... LOL
OHHH duhhh .... I shoot D90's Rmac one of my BFFs has a 700 and I thought he could wireless sync to his camera, IN fact I'm pretty sure I was holding the flash for him at a rodeo.. But B and H said nope that wouldn't work...??? He has the SB700. Yeah neither of us know what we're doing, I had brought my long sync cord so maybe we didn't, Neither of us remember...
Any how Opinions, suggestions, and stupid answers all Appreciated!!! |

I hope I'm following your question correctly...would this site be helpful?
CyberSync
I use these triggers and they work very well for my speedlight flash off camera. |

The Nikon flash itself is >$300, so you have to factor that in, but....
Does the D90 really not work in commander mode? I thought it did. I think you should be able to put your camera's popup flash into commander mode (check the menus on your camera), then it will fire the remote flash.
Regardless, there are some alternatives....A pair of pocket wizards or radiopoppers is $400, and will be a lot more flexible than using the Nikon infrared stuff. Either one still does TTL. For what you're doing, where speed matters, I'm not sure TTL is all that useful, though.
For less money, if you want to learn to go manual, you can find RadioPopper Jr ($169). You can also find cheap chinese crap on ebay for $20 or $30. (Search for flash triggers) I have a set of "cactus v2" triggers. They're definitely cheap, chinese, and crap, but they fire my flashes surprisingly well for the $30 I paid for them. If I were trying to make my living with this stuff, I'd get the pocket wizards, though.
The advantage to learning to do this stuff in manual mode is that you can buy one of the older Nikon flashes that won't do TTL with the modern DSLR's for around $100 (SB-28's, for example).
I actually have a couple of SB-26's that I'm trying to sell right now if anyone's interested. Now that I don't do hummingbirds anymore, I don't really need to own 6 flashes. |

You have CLS on your D90, so you should be able to trigger most Nikon speedlights with no extra equipment at all. There are limitations of course, like distance, line of sight and ambient light, but it can be done. You will need radio triggers if you cannot use CLS. But CLS will give you the advantage of TTL which most radio triggers won't. |

You would like remote, fast recharge, and ttl?
nikon SB 910 $ 550.00
Pw mini tt1 (transmitter) $ 200.00
Pw flex tt (receiver ) $ 220.00
and you still need external battery for faster power recycle time....
$1,000 sounds about right |

In the menu under custom setting "e2" you will find the option to set up commander mode on your camera. The SB600, SB700, SB900 and the SB910 will all be able to recive the signal from your camera. As stated by "rcollier" you will be limited to distance and line of site. In commander mode you will get full TTL as well as all other funtions that the flash is capable of. You will also be able to fire/control more than one flash at once. If you do a search on Google or You tube you will find lots of helpfull instructions. I think the sales person did not relize that the D90 was CLS compatible. |

This is frankly horribly disappointing that B&H would give you such openly shitty advice, and something I would expect more from Best Buy. It's disappointing because you could get an SU800 or ANY OTHER POSSIBLE TRIGGER METHOD AND A FLASH FOR UNDER $1k.
CLS compatible flashes in order of sophistication (top to bottom) SB910, SB900, SB800, SB700, SB600*, SB400*, SB-R200*. *= does not support master function, can only be used as a slave within a setup. This asterisk is of limited import to you since your camera supports onboard commander, but for others reading this that have bodies that do not, it is important.
SU800's are needed for bodies that do not have onboard commander, such as but not limited to D40, D5100, D4, D3/3s/3x.
Your options for wireless triggering look like this-
If you want to simply TRIGGER (meaning, set them off to coincide with your photo) your flashes off camera, you have lots of options. Here are some- onboard flash, SU800, Cybersync remotes, Pocketwizard, Radiopoppers, Chinese generic.
If you want to control flash power remotely or utilize TTL, your choices are greatly reduced and the cost goes up overall. Your choices- onboard*, SU800*, Pocketwizard, Radiopoppers. *= optical triggers have a host of limitations that radio are not subject to. Generally with optical you are limited to line of sight (not always, but usually) and will have decreased performance in bright open sunlight scenarios. Radio triggers do not experience these issues, but instead can be subject to interference from outside sources (hence multiple channels).
Determining which will be more applicable to you dictates what I'd recommend. If you have any questions, I know the Nikon flashes very well and can probably answer you. |

I use the CyberSync transmitter and receiver with my Nikon SB-900, and it works very nicely. These are a whole lot cheaper than Pocket Wizards, too:

As others have said, you need nothing more than your camera's built-in flash to control other Nikon flashes.
How to use Commander Mode on your D90:
