It's been a busy week for me. On Jan.31 I was in the hospital for belly surgery. Part of the small bowel & part of the colon (where they join together) was removed. I have a whole new vocabulary, a midline incision, & 27 staples (I got a shot w/my iPhone 2 seconds after the surgeon removed the bandage). I got home this afternoon. Soooo I'm behind on everything. The daily chores can wait. I'm gonna catch up on voting/commenting. It's a priority, esp since I fits in nicely w/my plan to spend as much time as possible in my lazyboy! |

Good grief, Pixelpig! After all that surgery and what you
must gone through to get to that point,
I'd have a whole new vocabulary too.
One I would be loath to share in polite company!
Heal quickly, good friend. And take care of yourself. |

Hoover, week 6
Will be off for 10 days or so without Hoover, so the next image has to wait. Hope to catch up later, both in images and in voting.

From last nights assignment. Again the 400MM shooting far court. Everyone tells me that 400 is too long to shoot far court, and it's sure a lot of hit and miss because framing is tough. But I sure like the compression of the background even at that distance.

Hi
Something completely different for my next image.
I didn't post that in the week I took it, because I thought I may enter something from that shoot in the free study. In the end I didn't, but never mind. Here is my week 5. It was my first time at this type of Sport (its called Dirt Jumping, in case you didn't know either :-)), and I happen to find it by chance close to where I live. I had seen it on TV with motorbikes before, but never on these small little bicycles. It got really exciting and I had a fun time.

and here is my week 6.
This is also a new genre for me. I am usually much too concious to do "street" photography, but I was bored at the airport.

Low Light, Long Exposure #5
Started with a reflection from the window at night in my hospital room.
Is anyone else sleeping (on purpose) in their lazyboy? I'm recovering a little each day. Thanks for your good wishes!

I've only submitted one other picture this year thanks to work and a cold that is lingering far, far past its welcome. (Are they ever really welcome?)
I decided to submit this pic to finish up January. I may not have taken it in January but I put a lot of learning hours into the processing. I figure that counts for something. All comments (positive and constructive) sincerely welcomed.
I'm off to make sure I can keep up in February. |

Tried my hand at oil on water this week. I had tried that a long time ago, and enjoyed it, but this time I didn't much enjoy it. But I didn't have much time to shoot this week. So here's the drops:
These are the same oil drops on water, but from right on top (tripod). The other is handheld, from the side.

Love those Ursula...what are you doing to get the colors? I tried oil on water once without anything special lighting wise and they weren't 1% as nice! |

Put a bunch of colourful scarves sort of randomly "thrown together", and lit them with a small gooseneck desk lamp. Put the pan with water on a sort of stand (hmmmm, how to explain ... This is the "how to" I was following).
Added: She (the lady from the how to) used flash and extension tubes. I used neither. I'm no good at flash, and I don't have extension tubes. I'm not sure I want to try this again though ... I got oil on my favourite pants! No good.

Architectural Oddities & Embellishments is getting way too interesting. High on my list was this bldg where a friend of mine lives. Always in awe of that remarkable doorway, I went lurking this week and took some images. The doorway reminds me of a confection that might be found on a wedding cake. More detail shots are in my notes.
Designed by one Herman Carl Baumann in 1925 in the Churrigueresque style there's quite a bit about H.C.'s life in this pflueger blog down about 4 paragraphs.
I had no idea this little self-imposed theme would be so interesting. But it is! |

In and Around Balboa Park, Week 6
I just realized that I've used a different lens for all six shots this year. I wonder how long I can keep this up. |
