CS5 is much easier on the wallet than CS6, looking for opinions on the difference in functionality v price.
To put all this in perspective, I currently use the basic Mac and Canon EOS editing software. So either is going to be a significant improvement. |

I have CS3 and hardly use it. I run LR4 and Elements 10. Hardly touch elements unless I am doing photo manipulation and integration of a few images etc.
Do you need a heavy duty program for your needs? Elements and a few others are very good if your use will only be light. |

HUGE difference in speed - CS6 flies by the older version in almost everything way... like 5 seconds instead of 50 seconds of waiting... |

I agree with what Chris says though your speed gains will depend on your computer specifics such as number or processor cores, amount of RAM, and strength of your Graphics processor. CS6 made great strides over CS5 in leveraging the power your computer might have to complete processes more quickly.
Also, depending on what camera you now have or may have in the future for maybe a couple more years CS5 may not have the RAW engine to work with your camera. It angers a lot of people, but Adobe tends to stop releasing new RAW compatibility for anything but the latest version of Photoshop. You could still convert your camera RAW files to DNG files to make them compatible with an older version of Ps if you need to- but that's kind of a pain.
In addition, Adobe Lightroom 4 (awesome app!) hands files off to CS6 better than it does to CS5 (they both use the same RAW engine).
All that said, Photoshop Elements may indeed do everything you need at a much more attractive price than full-blown Photoshop and it does support RAW files from new cameras as they are released. |

Also bear in mind that Adobe's stated future path is to only allow upgrades from one full version back. So if you buy CS5 today, and in the future want to upgrade to CS7, whenever that's released, you may well be SOL. |

Thanks for your responses to date, some great info. My computer is a new I Mac (good spec) and camera is a Canon 7D. I am strictly a keen amature and looking for software to enhance some of my shots and to use for some of the challenges, is Elements all I need ? |

Your equipment is very capable. As far as your app needs go, it seems like you might do just fine with Elements. You can get the latest version (11) for as little as $49 on sale. But you can also download a free trial copy that is good for 30-days. Maybe it would be good for you to do that and see how you like it first. The interface of Elements is a little more simplified (a good thing really) and some of the processes have different names than they do in Photoshop, but they essentially do a lot of the same things. And there are PLENTY of successful participants here at DPC who use Elements too. I would give Elements a try...

Thanks Brent sounds like a sensible starting point.

I would certainly trail Elements for 30 days.
I think you can then trail Photoshop for 30 days as well. |

I wonder where they go if you trailed them. |

do you even have a need for full blown cs5 or 6? most can get by with elements and that much much easier on the wallet.
my recommendation would be to get lightroom and elements. |

I'm bursting to say that i got CS6 for christmas!!!!!! FINALLY I have photoshop!
and to follow up your question, it seems that currently your photographic interests don't seem to warrant an investment such as photoshop. I personally would advise you to think about where you want to be with photography in a couple years... if you see it becoming a more important part of your life, I personally would immediately learn the work flow that comes with photoshop so that when you're ready for the next step you are already accustomed to the basics. as for CS5 or 6 go with 6 there are very rare cases when buying the last model is the right decision, IMO this is not one of them. |

Every major upgrade, so you would not have to buy, for instance a hypothetical 6.5. The every-major-upgrade rule is something they tried to perpetrate at the end of 2011, and there was so much backlash that they relented, temporarily. I believe they still intend this to go into effect, however. For owners of CS4 or CS3 who think they will want to upgrade, I would advise looking *immediately* at their eligibility.
ETA:
Here we go. Notice that the upgrade pricing from CS3 & CS4 to CS6 is the same as for CS5 to CS6, but that deal ends *tomorrow*. After this, I believe you would essentially have to re-purchase.
