I am new to photography and would like to learn how to use my DSLR. Any courses/online training that you would recommend? Any good books/videos?
Thanks. |

Do what I did... Start entering challenges and asking questions. My first challenge I scored like a 4.0... It was literally, all uphill from there. I read Understanding Exposure, and it is a great tool for understanding the relation of ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. I highly recommend it, but... and the big but... there is no substitution for experience and there is no price you can put on the knowledge you can gain from the other members here. So... with that said... Do what you do, enter some challenges, get some feedback, and ask some questions. You will be surprised how quickly your photography will improve! |

try youtube, you will find tons of good tutorial. also ask people, in DPC I have seen folks are very good and they do share tips and tricks. There is only one thing that you would have to do, try, try , try and one day you will succeed!

I'm with Sirashley. Take your camera off automatic and shoot, shoot, shoot. Read your camera manual, and try each setting to see what the results are in a picture. If you don't want to go totally manual (M), try aperture priority (A or Av) or shutter priority (S or Tv). Av will allow you to control the amount of the picture in focus (depth of field) while setting the shutter speed automatically, Tv allows you to control the shutter speed while the camera sets the depth of field automatically.
The beauty of digital photography is that it costs the same to take 1 picture as it does to take 500 (just don't print them all).
tanguera gave me some good advice - choose an object and try to shoot it from all different angles, and in all sorts of different lighting - then get creative and shoot it some more. (Sorry, tanguera, loose translation on my part...)
Oh, and don't hesitate to switch back to automagic if you want to shoot pictures you want to keep - it is OK to use a crutch while you need it, just not OK to get so used to it, you can't do without it.

I offer a course in macro photography of flies on elephant dung. It's kind of a niche market tho..... |

If it's really magic, maybe I should give it a try. Will it make my score better? :)
