i use both artist and photographer to describe what i practice and am. because im a practicing artist and also a photographer and at times they become blurred into one, when i use photography as part of my art or as a medium for more artistic photography... so its a grey area at times, but you can call yourself what you want at the end of the day it is not more prestigious nor is it a term to segregate yourself from other creative people it is merely the title by which people can instantly recognise what it is you are labelled in order to denote your specialisation just like plumber, manager or checkout person... its what you do that justifies that title that will let people decide if thats suitable title to use... it is not pretentious or anything demeaning or otherwise to call yourself an artist... i am very happy and proud to be known as an artist
