I’ve been away from here (and photography) for the past 6 months or so – and NOT because I wanted to be. This past weekend was the first time my camera came out of the bag in a very long time, and I had a very specific goal in mind about what I wanted to shoot. Only problem was, I had some issues trying to decide the best way to achieve my goal based on the set up I was considering. My first thought at that point was this – ask for assistance from the DPC community and surely someone will be able to help me. So, I posted my question and very quickly had 7 responses. The advice I received helped me tremendously that day – I am quite sure I could not have gotten the same results without it. Tell me, where else can you get that kind of diverse support (and encouragement) that quickly? I was provided with technical advice, links to websites and as I said, just plain encouragement. The people on this website who are so willing to lend support and help me achieve my goal of becoming a better photographer is why I’m here and why I will stay here.
BTW, I entered into a challenge for the first time in a long time and it felt so good to be back doing that again. I’m watching my score rise and fall - just like riding a roller coaster I’ve got that old twitchy finger disease again – wanting to hit the refresh button every few minutes! I love this ride!
If I could suggest any type of improvement, it would be a button on whether or not you wish to receive comments on your photo. Personally, I love ‘em (good or bad) but not everyone does so to each his own.

I personally DO NOT wish to receive such feedback. The dislike of certain subjects is very subjective and does not equate to constructive criticism. If this site had ANY IMPROVEMENTS FINALLY implemented (Get Satisfaction!!) I wish it were the NO PERSONAL VIEWS type comments button, or a button called CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM WELCOME. |
I have entered recently after a little downtime and for a short time looked forward to seeing how the image was doing. But after less than 24 hrs I would have to say I know why I walked away. A comment was left that wasn't constructive and I can't see the point in it at all other than to annoy.
The threads still have the same rumblings and usual agitators including the one who left said comment.
The improvements are non existent and that doesn't look like it will change anytime soon.
I have used the examples above as they are valid, I want constructive critiques but the comments are rapidly becoming like Flickr and 500 px with the odd non sensical comment that just infuriates.
I am unwilling to pay even the small fee that comes with this site until such time some improvement is made and some of the people who seem intent on winding others up leave or are removed from the site.
I used to love this site but it has become stagnant and dominated by a few characters that make the place unwelcoming. |
Well said, Jon. I came back because I am addicted to the update button but the level of hate and rubbishing at DPC is even worse than before. Even the people I had respect for display unwelcoming behavior. I asked SC about curbing the behavior of some individuals making hurtful statements and personal attacks but it seems now to be encouraged. |

I've never gotten anything but love, encouragement and support here. Like most things in life, you get out of it what you put into it. |

Unfortunately, comments are an all or nothing proposition. We can't cherry-pick the ones we want; we can only pay attention to the ones we want, and obviously ignore the ones we don't. If we are going to ask for feedback anywhere in our lives, we should have a skin thick enough to take both the bad with the good, or not put ourselves out there in the first place.
Jon, I'm sorry to hear of your experience. Perhaps, as Brian said, I'm focusing on all those things I find unique and wonderful about DPC. It is a microcosm of the world, where there are both great people and instigators. I've only been here 4 years and do not find it more or less anything. It's pretty much as it's always been, where a mix of really diverse people from diverse cultures rub elbows, and occasionally rub each other the wrong way. |

How about a little check box that says "I DID NOT find this comment helpful"?
Next to the usefull check box.
Maybe this will stimulate a bit of conversation and a better explanation can be had.
When I get a comment I don't understand or maybe have an explanation for it's a bit hard to relay that info to the person.

Unfortunately, no. Some people don't even bother to read the comments. So you really don't know if they didn't like it or just didn't care.

I just came back to say that this place totally sucks, that's why I left for good and it's just gotten worse each time I come back, so I am leaving for good and when I get back, I expect things to be better, but I just know they will be worse, so I am leaving. For good.
...oh I can't stay mad. I'm back. But I expect some changes. Or I am outta here. For good.

I figure people are busy and have things to do and if they don't have the time, well they don't have the time. I don't get insulted.
After a person leaves a comment on one of my images they may never go back to it again.
If I check the "DID NOT find this comment helpful button" they just come back and then they can read what I wrote. |

Actually, even though I find comments like that quite annoying, I still find them helpful. I would much rather know that they voted my shot low simply because it was another water drop rather than they thought the shot sucked for other reasons. It gives me insight into to the mind of the voter.
Do I think that it's fair that water drops get an automatic one from some people? No. That military shots are an automatic 1 from others? No. That nudes get slammed from the nude patrol? No. I would much rather think that people could handle being fair, honest, and open minded and view each shot individually and without bias. But not everyone can do that. So, that being said, I would much rather have an annoying comment explaining the vote than simply a 1 with no explanation. I can handle being annoyed. :)

NO, ART! DON'T GO!!
Based on my casual skimming of the thread and seeing those words in your post, it makes me so sad that if you leave i'm going with you! For good! (until i come back and check to see how things are)

After giving this some thought though, won't we just end up with another problem. A commentator thinks their comment is useful, photographer doesn't, more bitching ensues? You know threads will be started about this and PMs sent that shouldn't be sent. |

Was it me, Jon? I typically conduct wine tastings while commenting and while I'm only trying to be funny I often just end up hurting those around me. |

And.... It works again...
Issues are raised, and ignored until we all start bickering with preach other. SC should be along shortly to lock the thread, because of the personal attacks, and then yet another plea will have gone unanswered.... |

Ditto this.....

You don't have to be either a veteran or an expert to have this perspective. I'm certainly no expert, but I've been here for 6+ years and 340 some challenges. I am *still* thrilled with my opportunities and possibilities that arise regularly here.
Originally posted by kasaba: I don't do half the stuff we could do here, but when I do ask a question on the forum or in a private message, I have always received very quick, very nice and very helpful replies - thank you.
I have found an amazing tutor here, who has helped me so much. |
Yeah.....how 'bout that???? Add to that the personal friendships, the GTGs, and the care and help people give willingly over and above the photography aspect......it's pretty darn amazing.
Originally posted by kasaba: Are there issues I don't like? |
Yeah......the myopic people who forget that what they get out of any endeavor in life is their own direct responsibility, and they shouldn't expect an internationally populated site to change to suit their narrow expectations. Enjoy the site, participate the way the site works, and if it really doesn't suit......move along, don't just sit there and gripe.
Originally posted by kasaba: Anyway, just some thoughts from a "Happy Member" (Yes, we DO exist :-)) |
Yeah, well, there are plenty of us around. You just don't hear from us as much because we're enjoying life here rather than trying to pick flysh*t from pepper.
DPC is wonderful!

Yeah, I'm cherry-picking and taking this a little out of context, BUT.....
There's nothing that feels better than winning a ribbon when we're all in the same field.
NOTHING!!!

Absolutely! I think this is the best way -- I was just letting you know that a comment unchecked isn't necessarily a comment unappreciated. :)

Okay, coming back to this thread with a little more time on my hands. I think the reason that most of us came here was to learn. Look at the majority of people's profiles and you will notice that their scores gradually got better with time, except for maybe vawendy, who was already a great photographer when she arrived :)
That's why I have been such an advocate of the DPL. The DPL took DPC to new heights. Participation was really high during the DPL and it brought people together to learn and grow. I personally learned more during that time than any other span at DPC.
Lastly, with everyone here claiming different things they think are wrong with the site, perhaps we should narrow it down a bit. My grievance may not even make the top 5, but in order to try to get somewhere, I think it may be wise to take a poll of all the different suggestions, then present the top 5 to the powers that be. Not sure how that could be done but bombarding the powers that be with a 1000 different suggestions is likely to get us nowhere...

If you stay out of the forums - except for the fun ones of course - this place isn't so bad. Just make sure you put the negative threads on ignore (which I know you do).
Trying to get Langdon to make significant changes to this site will be like trying to stop the Israeli–Palestinian conflict once and for all. |
