How do you know? Are there messages in the "Sent" box you didn't send?
(I'm asking because it's possible to "think" you got hacked but really got spoofed instead, meaning, they are using your return address but they are not actually in your email system). |
I never got to my AOL account (my choice) but my husband and Steve (Yo_Spiff) received them they said it came from my aol account (e-mail address)...I guess I should have said my "e-mail got kidnapped"...lol
I think your right Neil...as my computer cks out fine with our spyware/spamware/whatever ware it is now...lol |
Unfortunately, there's nothing to protect you against spoofing -- it happens to me occaisionally, and then the main consequence is that you have to live with all the bounced messages (since they typically use your return address to send bulk spam). Eventually it dies down...until the next time!

I looked in my eBay, but the records don't appear to go that far back. It was no raving heck, probably just under $20 for around 24 CDs. Free money, though. Would almost buy a case of Canadian beer back then. :-)
Back then, in the early days of eBay, I experimented by selling a couple of unusual things. A pair of used underwear. I was pretty grossed out by some requests I got to got with the underwear, so I never did that again. Then I tried selling my vote for an election. I got an offer, but then cancelled the auction before it ended when some reporter got in touch with me wanting to do an article and saying that what I was doing was illegal. He was looking for some deep statement on politics, but I was just goofing around.

Neil is right, the emails can be sent from anywhere, the "From" field is easily changed using very simple tools (or just by knowing a weak mail server).
But just to be sure, why don't you try running another anti-malware software? Try MalwareBytes for example. Most common e-mail spoofing I've seen is usually running on your own computer, accessing your contacts and sending out emails - although usually they run "stealthy" and are used to join your computer to a spam-sending Borg army :).

We are using Windows Defender, we ran it last night...I'll probably run it again tonight...on both our computers... |

I never click the link, which is different in each email. |
AOL has always been notoriously problematic. Between their proprietary, and weird, ways of providing 'Net service, and the fact that they just plain flat ignore their customers' needs....I could never understand why they didn't just burn out. Anyone that's ever been a mailing list admin will tell you that they had more trouble with AOL, and some of their customers, than all other ISPs combined. I had always attributed the ills with the way that they made it so easy for some people to connect with their weird way of doing things that some people simply couldn't handle the way the rest of the world did things on line.
I also noticed that their solution to some of their customers' complaints was to close their accounts.
FWIW, the blind e-mails.......no subject line and nothing but a link inside have been going around for a couple years ago. I've always reminded people to never open a link that you didn't know was coming, no matter who it's from. I've had two viruses (virii?) since 1993, one that was just sheer stupidity on my part, and the other was from a friend who had gotten hacked. I trusted the link because he was a mailing list admin at the same site I was working at, and opened it 'cause it was from him. That was prolly nigh onto 15 years ago, now. Good ol' common sense is your best computer weapon against invasion.

My first Internet account was $18.99 a month for 30 minutes and 89 cents a minute after that. I could download a jog in about 20 minutes on a 1400bps modem. Yes I'm old. Lol |

Their old slogan went something like "Netzero, we will NEVER charge, EVER." ... haha!

My boss is an AOL zombie. Causes problems often, but if anybody mentions that it's AOL's fault he goes ballistic. I always tell the newbies at work not to diss AOL, but sometimes they forget briefly and end up getting roasted by the boss. Happened just last week, again.

I've cked my computer spyware...changed all passwords (made them complicated as I can...great now I'll be locked out) |
Does this mean we are not getting married? I sent the airfare and everything, just as you asked! What about your rightful inheritance from your father? We are still on for that, right? Just a couple of more officials to bribe to get the millions and millions of dollars out of that corrupt country... You don't want to give up now, do you? ;-)
