How would you define a "Road Sign"? Would a "Lane Sign" meet the challenge? Does it need to be a sign ON a road, or will one NEAR a road be ok? Since it says Road Sign, does that mean a shot with more than one sign should be marked down? Is a horse path a "road"? What about a deer path? Deer leave "sign" :)
Yes I'm kidding... Sort of :)

There are already more submissions than for the last one!
Can't help thinking that voting will be a bit of a chore for this one.

What about a picture of a dog next to a sign? |

How about this...
You take a picture that defines the challenge to YOU... and worry less about what would make the popular vote. It is about art... art is interperative. The challenges are loosly defined for a reason.

Ruchart, that's would be so wonderfully ideal!
But as someone who has been here since March and submitted nearly 50 pics, I can tell you that, if you care about getting a good score, there is some element of second-guessing the voters that is required.
Since it is a contest, that is definitely a consideration. I have plenty of opportunities to pursue what pleases me and me alone outside of this site :). If it was just a 'share your ideas' and not a contest type site, it would be totally different.

What about a picture of a red barn, with a nice landscape in the background, and a funny sign in the foreground? Oh yeah and a kitten, too.
Would that work? ;-)

Actually, I DID start this discussion and noone really wants to discuss it apparently. I think I might sit this one out. Road signs are pretty boring around here, and I'm afraid of all the "doesn't meet challenge" votes. |

In the spirit of artistic freedom and exploration embodied by DPChallenge, I will be severely penalizing any photographs which include anything but a verifiable road sign. The sign must be included in its entirety, be devoid of highlights and/or shadows, and not be in any way obscured by foreground elements, grafitti, dust or other atmospheric contamination. Given the new cropping rules, I will only allow for background areas which appear in the image in the case of non-rectangular signage (ie. yield, stop), and these areas must be significantly outside of the depth of focus to be blurred into a creamy, non-distracting bokeh. Include signposts, bracketing hardware, and other means of support at your peril.
I will be recommending for disqualification any signage relating to a business, private residence, government installation or public area not designated as a road. I will also be in favor of disqalification for images relating to avenues, boulevards, highways, freeways, rural routes, expressways, turnpikes, tollways, on and off ramps, autobahns, streets, lanes, trails, prospects, towpaths, alleys, terraces, places, and culs de sac.
Happy shooting.

You can see bokeh in this picture in the background. It is all the bright circles from the light going through the trees in the upper half of the background as an example:
If this is good or bad is probably up to you, but from the linked article, this is considered bad bokeh - as the circles are harsher on the edges and 'well defined' but it is taken with a really cheap lens.

Gordon I wish I had a camera that would actually have a depth of field that works. My portrait shots usually never do that. |

Yep, it'll absolutely be boring if people stand in front of a road sign and point their cameras and shoot. The challenge comes from finding a way to interpret the challenge guidelines creatively and in a way pleasing to the eye. :-) |
