Howdy!
The update button that was mentioned is a member only thing, but if you enter a challenge, the scores update every hour at 10 after the hour.
This is a good place to learn and share. There are a lot of good people on this site who will be happy to help you with anything that you can't find on your own by digging around in the forums. It's not totally about photography here. There is also a family atmosphere going on here as well. The DPC Real Life Threads

Welcome David! Enjoy yourself! Don't be afraid to ask for help if you have questions about rules, submissions, anything. There are folks with a lot of experience around these parts and you WILL get your answer.

Here's the single most important piece of advice you will ever receive on DPC: pick up your camera RIGHT NOW, and check the time and date settings. Make sure they're correct.
You're welcome.
And welcome :-) |

Welcome!
Here are a few important ingredients for a first submission:
1) You like it.
2) It meets the challenge description.
3) It was taken during the challenge dates (ref: Tanguera's advice).
4) It is the maximum allowable size.
If you get close on each of those four points, you should start learning how the site works and having fun.
Also, I suggest you vote on as many images as possible during the voting period because voting makes you think. Through voting you can recognize what works and what does not. When you better understand what you like in others' photos, you can begin to improve on your own.
I've found that DPC is much more interesting when you have an entry in the mix, so I urge you to jump in as soon as possible.
Good luck! |

Regarding votes - should I be voting for all for all entries in any one challenge?
If not how should I decide? |

The entries will be presented to you in a randomized order, and everyone will get the entries in a different order. I believe this is done via a cookie in your browser. I have noticed that when I vote in a challenge from different computers, the image thumbnails are ordered differently.
So, even if you don't vote the entire challenge, it should even out and everybody should end up getting within a few votes of the same quantity. I try to vote 100% of the challenges I vote on if I have time, but I don't always manage to do it.

I would recommend that the most fair way to vote is to vote for the entries as they come to you. The entries are randomly selected so you don't put any specific bias on what you vote on.
I personally vote on every entry but as long as you can vote on 20% of the entries, your votes will count.
There are a set of rules that you should look at and understand before you vote: Voting Rules.
Each person is going to interpret the challenges and the entries differently, but as long as you are consistent, you are voting correctly!
The scale is 1 to 10 where 1 is considered bad and 10 is good. How you interpret beyond that is up to you.
Good luck and enjoy yourself. |

Welcome to DPC, David. Here's a couple more helpful links:

But before you pass through the gate, you must first correctly define "fine art photography". ;-)
Have fun. |

I also try to vote for 100% a challenge, and I always vote in the sequence created by the site. In my opinion, it is bad form to pick out photos based on thumbnails because they are such a poor representation of the actual photo. In addition, it is widely agreed that actually entering votes or changing votes based on thumbnails does not do justice the voting process. |

Thank you all for advice and welcome.
I have now voted in the "Simile" challenge and see how the system works. It was not too arduous to vote on all the 96 entries and I like the summary of my votes I saw when finished. I hope there is some chance to review my choices when results are released but either way I look forward to seeing an outcome.
I did see the thread on "fine art photography" and may put my own opinion in the thread.
I look forward to making my first submission and being taken apart by the stalwarts here!

That sounds very useful indeed - to be able compare my own judgement with the opinion of others sounds invaluable.
Why didn't I find this site years ago?
My problem with taking and submitting is that I am tied to my business premises a lot of the time. |

First off welcome. Second, to see how your votes stacked up with the majority click on the challenge name once the results are posted and on the left hand side in the challenge details near the bottom you will see a box that you can check to show the entries in the order ( 10-1) that you voted on. |

You can also go back and adjust your votes while the challenge is still open to voting should you wish to do so. Some of the voters do that to "fine tune" their voting or to see if their first impressions still feel the same when viewing entries the second time.
You do not have to spend a lot of time to get images to put in the challenges unless you would prefer to set up and shoot specifically for a challenge. Almost all of my entries were shot "on the run" during the week, by just keeping the challenge topics in mind during the week, and looking for things to shoot that would fit as I go along.
Sometimes a challenge topic will be one that strongly suggests a place, subject, or setting that I know would be right, and I will go there to shoot for the challenge if there is time.
The big thing is to just be inspired to shoot more, and to learn as you go.
We're happy you are here.
