I would like to know if you have had an err 1 or 99 message on your canon products, can you please respond with which body and lens you were using. ( I will be sending info along to canon). Thanks very much. Mine is as follows:
canon rebel- 100-400L IS USM, and with sigma 70-300mm
mark ii- 100-400IS USM L

Only had the 99 error with an old Sigma 70-300 apo macro well documented problems that require re-chipping). Can on through and through now with no probs.

I get err 99 w/ my 10D and 50/1.8 Mk II. It won't happen for weeks at a time, then I'll get a session where every other shot results in an err 99. Very frustrating. |

my 50mm mk II works fine every time no problem, as does the 100 f2.8 macro and the 75-300 IS.
The only lens ever which gave me an error was an old sigma 35-80 which sits on the front of my wifes EOS 250 |

I called Canon when I got my Error 99. They told me that it's from using an older, non-compatible lens. They said some non-canon brands that will cause trouble when using ones a few years old. They said no canon lens should do that. They said new non-canon lenses are fine, but a few old ones cause problems. So, i went out and replaced my telephoto with a canon one (from ebay) and it works great! No more error!!!

I have never had an Error 99 with my 10D. I use the following lenses:
- 35mm f/3.0
- 50mm f/1.4
- 85mm f/1.8

The only error 99 I ever got was with the Canon 55mm 1.8 lens. It's never happened again, so I'm assuming it was just a fluke of some sort.

Thx all for responses, but, I would just like to know who HAS had the error problems and with which lens.
I would like to be able to show some sort of pattern to canon. So those of us who DO have the problems with them can hopefully get them fixed. |

I just received 70-200mm f2.8L IS Canon lens, when the battery got almost empty the camera started giving error 01 (in the manual, it says to clean the lens contacts). I got scared in the beginning, but i'm almost 100% sure it was b/c of the battery.
no prob with 17-40 f4L
Even though i shouldn't be saying anything... only had my camera for 1 month... :$

The lens I used was a Quantaray 70-300mm telephoto, bought in 1999. I talked to Canon and they said that this lens will occasionally cause an Err99. They said to try to clean the contacts, but they were almost certain it was the technology of the older lens. And after many cleanings and tests, it was deemed the lens. I have had ZERO problems since I got my newer lens.

At first I got the error 99 with my old lenses and I was told Canon updated the firmware so they would not work.
I bought all new lenses and I was getting the error again just awhile back along with the fact in was not registering an AF point with all the shots and the images seemed blurry. So I had to ship it in for warranty repair.
It is now on it's way back from the factory service center in Irvine Cal.
Canon says that the Error 99 is a catch all error and can be a number of problems from bad batteries, poor contacts and etc. Very bad planning on their part if you ask me.

Sigma re-chipped (with a fast turnaround too, for free) my 100-300 so that it'd work with my 300D sans-err99. Canon is doing this firmware crap just so you'll buy their lenses over the competition.

I have the 300D with the kit lens, Canon 17-40L, Canon 28-135, Canon 50mm 2.5 macro and Canon 100-300. No errors to report.

I get the err99 with my old sigma 70-300 APO macro (the non super one) on my 300D. Called sigma and they said they would replace the chip for free if the lens was less than 3 years old and for half price (EUR 49) if the lens was older. They could only do this with the 'super' version of the 70-300, so I guess I have to sell mine.

I have gotten err99 several times on my 10D for no apparant reason. I am using all canon lenses so I am not sure what the problem has been. It usually resolves itself if I turn the camera on and off. That said I am now having MAJOR problems with focusing. Images will seem sharp and in focus when I take them but will be blurry (almost like motion blur but in conditions where I should not be having it). I called yesterday and they told me to update my firmware but it did not help at all. I am going to call again today, I am very disappointed. I love my camera but I hate having problems with something I paid so much money for. |

yes, exactly why I am trying to compile this info, when I talk to canon they try to help, but seem to say this is a problem unique to me and I just disagree, so thx to all of you who have responded! |
