Hi I have Nikon 5400 and I got Sandisk CF Ultra 2 512 mb. This CF Card have 9mb/s write and 10mb/s read (60x). So when I take picture in RAW quality or Hi quality (tiff format) it`s only 6-7 second faster then noname 128mb cf card or Nikon sandsisk cf32mb that I got with my camera. On noname card writing raw is approximately 28 second depending of free space on card. On CF Ultra 2 its take approximately 23 seconds. When I put this card into Nikon D70 it`s write RAW for lees then a second. What means that is problem with my camera. So dose anyone knows it is a problem only with my camera or CP 5400 do not support cf ultra 2 card. If not support cf Ultra 2 card than there is no difference between normal CF and Ultra for my camera. I have update my firmware to 1.4 version if that have any meter. |

I dont know much about the write speed, but I would like to hear more about the write speed on the D70... did your post say it writes RAW data in 1 second? the reason for my interest is that I just bought a D70 and am still learining about its ability. thanks

Our little camera is notoriously slow at some file types - check out the dpreview review of it. I suspect yours is behaving entirely normally - unfortunately. I think it's to do with buffer size and usage, but I'm not really interested enough to find out.
I'm intrigued though as to why you want to shoot RAW or TIFF with it? - with such a small sensor, you aren't really gaining very much in terms off quality.

D70 have buffer with 6 shots in a RAW format. Writing raw on noname card is approximately 6 second but on this is 2 or less. It`s depending of free space on card. It`t write faster on empty card. On d70 indicator for wrighting is a small orange light at down right corner.
If you need mor information you can send me email.
Sensor is small but there is a difference in JPG and RAW quality. I don`t use a tiff because is very large but RAW is ok. |

Are you talking about the time that the camera is inactive while it's writing, or the time it takes to complete writing the image to the card?
The D70 does clever (for a camera) stuff with it's buffer, effectively multi-tasking so that you can shoot whilst some of the buffer is still processing and writing.

In answer to your original question, it seems plain that the write speed of the 5400 is limited by factors other than the card speed. So yes: there's no advantage to a faster card.

Yes, I am talking about inactive time while camera writing. On D70 writing depend of card speed. Thanks for answer but I saw that yesterday when you told me to check on dpreview. So I just can take my Ultra 2 and jump from bridge :). I guess that is the time to buy D70 or something like that :).
Thanks for help. |

Only jump if you have your cam with you - you'll get at least one (if you're shooting RAW) decent motion shot on thw way down :-)
