Hey guys,
finally i got enough money together to get myself a good digital camera. But after using an oldschool canon av-1 (not digital) camera for a while i have difficulties deciding for a digital camera as i have no experience in DIGITAL cameras.

SO yeah, i'm kind of hoping that you guys could help me out here.

so there are my choices (btw. im from germany, thats why prices are in euro!)

Nikon D100 Set - 1329,- Euros
Nikon D70 Set - 942,- Euros
Canon EOS-10D Set - 1339,- Euros

So which one would you recommend me the most, purpose for this camera photography for printing purposes.

Also i'd like to note that in my family we already have a few nikon lenses so if you'd recommend me the canon, do you think it makes up for it?

I dont know all the lenses we ve got but they re all of Very good quality.

Also i was wondering why the D100 is so much more expensive than the D70 as the d70 is newer..?

Thanks for your help.

Well, the new 10D is expected to be annouced in about 3 or 4 weeks. Should be available to buy around Sept-Oct time frame. This might be worth waiting for. If anything, the price on the 10D should come down a bit.

As for Nikon, I would choose the D70 over the D100. It's newer and has better image quality despite lacking some of the features of the D100.

Well, the Nikon D70 is getting wery high praise from the users. And it is the only one that has a spot meter. :)
I personally made my choice some time ago. (as you can see) and have had zero regrets. I was considering the Fuji S2 (Nikon mount) but when I saw the price of the 17-55mm, I got the Olympus. I would at least check it out.
Also remember, that digital seems to be more demanding for lenses, your collection might do fine for film, but you should check it out. I suggest you ask the people in the Nikon forums on dpreview.com.

Check to make sure your Nikon lenses will work with the D70. If they do, I'd get that camera. If lenses weren't an issue, I'd get the 10D for the better viewfinder and ISO 100. A lot of people like the D70's 1/500 x-sync, but ISO 100 is more useful to me. Just a personal preference.

Nikon's inept pricing policy?

The D70 looks like a great deal for less than €1000 - think I'd be tempted if I didn't have any Canon glass..

Forget D100. Go to the camera store and take a look at D70 and 10D and see who fits your hand better and what kind of controls you like better. Think it´s more question of personal preference than quality, both are great.
If you have some Canon glass or accesories you should maybe lean more to the Canon side.

As a Rebel owner I have to recomend that and for the price difference between the 10D and 300D you can have some decent lenses or other accesories.

i have a bit of a biased opinion, but i'd opt for the d70. newer technology of the 3, and personally i like nikon better myself :) considering the price, the d70 is the best bang for the buck out there right now. for me, the 1/500 flash sync, and the 1/8000 max shutter speed were big factors. also the power-on time (instant on), i-TTL flash metering, and Nikon's matrix-metering were big selling points for me.
