Can I add vignette to an advanced challenge photo?

The only thing to worry about is if the vignette is so heavy that it causes major elements of the photo to disappear. I have seen some images get DQ'ed when that happens.

What about adding blurring of a background? Seems that is acceptable.

A little bit is normally ok. But be careful to not remove (or obscure beyond recognition) major elements and to not change the typical viewer's description of the photo.

For instance, if someone looks at your original image and says "That is a person standing in front of X monument" but that same person would look at your edited image and say "That is a person", this is bad.

As long as you don't utterly obliterate whatever it is you're blurring, that's fine, BUT:

be sure to only use regular or gaussian blur to be safe; radial blur, motion blur, all that kind of stuff is "adding an element" that wasn't there before and will get you DQ'd.

I used motion blur on this entry to merge some of the LED light lines that stood out a little too much when light painting it. I had the SC check it before I submitted and they gave it the OK. So as long as your radial or motion blur doesn't create elements that were not there to begin with it can be legal. But it's a fine line, and I would always check first before you submit.

i asked the SC for pre-submission check on this for another reason, and they also commented i needed to be careful of the vignette not isolating the eye so much that it would cross the line of removing the other major element of the photo, the rest of the face.

so, as others said, just do it carefully...

You can (usually) get the informal opinion of a couple of SC members by submitting a Before/After comparison of your image in a Ticket (Help > Contact Us > DPChallenge - General Inquiry), along with your editing steps in as much detail as practical. This does not assure validation/DQ, but should give you a pretty good idea ...

Try to do this at least a couple of days before the submission deadline.

I don't think it's really "pre-approval" as it doesn't guarantee that it won't be DQ'd, but it gives you a general idea on if your chosen tool is legal.

Thanks. I added vignette, but all the visible elements were preserved ;) just added to conceal a little the white home made studio background ;) I think it is ok.

Yes. I sent a message to the concil and they said the picture was Ok and I would probably not have issues on advanced rule. After voting I will post the two here.
