As a new(er) member, I have looked at the rules for each of the challenges, and my thoughts and feelings about what they mean v.s. what is done to create the entries seems to vary pretty widely.

Is there somewhere in the forums that a photo has been taken, and shown across all the challenge rules. Taking a single image, and from the raw picture through the Basic, Expert, and Advanced Editing rules, show what is possible and acceptable to give some of us newbies direction on what we can and can't do.

I ask because I submitted my 'garbage' challenge photo with Basic editing rules, and only really adjusted the color/contrast to brighten up the photograph. However there are a few entries that look like they have had much more processing. This isn't a complaint about any of those entries, I am just looking to better understand what can and can't be done to an image depending it's rule class for each challenge.

Probably best to talk about any of the 'garbage' photos AFTER the challenge.

The best way to answer your question a bit sooner is to perhaps pull a couple of photos from past challenges that, in your eyes, look like they've been processed beyond the basic editing so that we can better answer your question.

I will say this, sometimes it's not the editing that can take credit for the 'look' but simply the actual shot (The actual subject, lights etc)

Although some photos might look like they were edited using basic or advanced, they were indeed edited using the expert rule set.

This is from the Things that go together challenge.

I'll agree with heavyj that there are *lots* of images that seem to be edited beyond Basic but the look is due to set-up and/or capture settings.
It's also possible to do more than you might think possible in Basic. FWIW, there has been a lot of talk about Basic Editing, and whether it needs to change. It has been around a long time, and I would argue that change is due, but it is what it is.
If you have specific questions about achieving a certain look in Basic, the very best thing to do is to point to specific photos from challenges that have completed voting, and ask in the forums. You will get *lots* of good feedback.

common that's a bad example. :P i only replaced the background from an earlier shot that had less noise.

i can see what the OP is getting at, and not specifically this challenge, but just because it looks expert edited doesn't mean it is. you can do some crazy stuff in basic legally so long as you apply it to the WHOLE image. the minute you start making selections its advanced editing and the minute you start combining multiple shots and applying textures and painting effects its expert editing.

don't confuse creative setup with advanced editing, here is a great example:

yes, that is advanced editing. someone actually set that up.

Welcome to DPC. You are experiencing what every new person here does: how-did-they-do-that-in-basic-itis??!!! What you don't know yet is just how much you don't know, and it's going to take time to learn it all. Don't despair. If you stick with it and do your homework, you'll progress very quickly, and learn all the "secrets". Maybe even come up with a few of your own.

The best part is that most DPCers are very generous with their help, so reach out, read the tutorials, the "how did they do that" section, ask questions, and be as specific as possible about the effect you're trying to learn. Enter side challenges. And do not discuss any image that is in voting :-)
