I switched from Nikon to Canon because Nikon wasn't where Canon was as far as video. I had the Canon 7D and the Nikon D700 but sold the D700 and my Nikon lenses, along with my Canon 7D and crop lenses to buy the 1D markiv. A great purchase, great pictures, great video...all I ever wanted...until now.

I'm thinking that in the long run, it might just be better to own both Nikon and Canon DSLR's...I'm not sure what a 'negative' would be about owning two different brand cameras (Please, let me know). You could own L lenses that perform well and FX lenses that can compliment where the L lenses fail and vice versa.

I make little money off my photography, barely enough for a lens or two, some lights and extras every year or so. The D4 isn't out yet and I will wait for the masses to have a go at it, but thus far I'm sold. The 1Dx hasn't shown it's true colors yet...so I'm waiting on that. If the 1Dx out performs the D4, I might just sell the 1dm4 and go for a 1dx...but if the 4D does what I hope it does, I might be in need of some serious financial backing (That means the wife's permission). I doubt I would get it...I'm looking at a budget of about 10,000 USD (To get the body and lenses I want) and that would probably take me a year in doing NOTHING (Interpreted: spend no money).

I keep looking around my apartment for something to sell on ebay...I keep thinking 'Well, I may get this job or that job' but nothing is for sure. I have 2 weddings in April, but that would not cover half of what I need (The job is not part of my regular work)

How do I justify all this spending...I guess I'm just going to have to spend more time behind the camera.

You could become the next Ken Rockwell.

So true. Ah well. It still comes up as the second when you Google "Ken Rockwell." And the first if you just Google "genius or fool." :-)

Hi, my name is kirbic, and I'm a gearhead.
Yes, I still lust after the newest gear, but I now always ask myself these questions:

"Will it make my results measurably better?"
"Will it get enough use to justify the cost?"
"Do I know exactly what purposes I will use it for, and am I confident that it will serve those needs to my satisfaction?"
"Will it depreciate steeply, or will I be able to recoup most of my cost if I re-sell it?"
"Do I have the expendable cash?"

The bottom line is that when I ask myself these questions, and answer them honestly, most of the time I can't convince myself that I should purchase the object of my lust. For example, my 5D body is over 6 years old, and I could recently have scored a 5DII body for just $1699 USD (Canon refurbished, not used). I passed. Not that it wasn't a great deal, it's just that the answers to the above questions weren't coming out as positive as I'd have liked.
With regard to the last question in particular, I now usually ask myself if I can pay for it out of current liquid cash, without financing and without affecting other things? If the answer is no, then I'd damn well better have a great reason to buy it. If the answer is yes, it can pretty much come out of disposable income, then I can live with less convincing answers. I recently bought a geared head from another DPCer, basically on a whim. I didn't really *need* it, but I did know that I had good applications for it, and the cost was such that I wasn't worried about it affecting other things.
It sounds like having two systems, with expensive glass for each is going to be a financial strain. I personally would never consider such a move unless I had rock solid reasons why one system wouldn't serve my needs. I have locked myself to Canon (look at my lens list). I recognize that Canon and Nikon will exchange top spots as they jockey for market share. Currently, Nikon is making some good moves. I'm confident Canon will respond. Perhaps the 5DIII will be the one that makes me jump.

my advice is use what you have - stretching yourself financially is never a great thing and ultimately your photography will suffer (you'll have to get additional hours to pay the loans) Be smart and make the most of what you have!

If I were single, I could afford it...I'm not, so I can't really buy it without using my credit card. BUT, I wouldn't be buying anything until summer or fall. By then I would have cash (I'm so not spending money...think Nikon, think Nikon). My friend works at the local electronics shop and can get me a deal, but not more than a couple hundred dollars. I have a friend in the photography business that gets his gear at a very low price compared to the rest, but that would require CASH and not credit...

I'm looking forward to the next couple months...

I should add, I just bought the Canon 50mm 1.4f...beautiful lens...

What's making ME laugh is that THREE of you gearheads have bought gear from ME: what does that make me?

Well, I'm an equal opportunity junkie... I've bought from at least four different DPCers.

Well, at least there's one good thing about having Nikon glass-
You can use it on a Canon, too.
You can't do the opposite so far as I know.

of course not, why would you want to expose all the sensor imperfections?

Ditto, currently in flux. It used to bug my wife with all the selling and buying etc, but she has come to learn that I never compromise the budget and find ways to make it work.
