I thought this would either be a high 6 or high 4. I should have aimed for a high 4 or low 2. This is the highest it's been so far.

There are certainly some interesting takes on the challenge. There are also at least one or two berries involved if I remember correctly. |

Methinks some people have mixed up bokeh with shallow dof !

Cranky voters over the last hour. Dropped from 6.45 to 6.14 over 7 votes. I know it couldn't be that they saw the mediocrity of my entry :) |

You have rated 115 of 114 images (101%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.6557.
How did I vote on more images than are in the challenge?

That's exactly what I thought while voting. There are some beautiful examples of bokeh but only about half the entries actually display a shallow DOF, which makes those shots not fit the challenge in my eyes, despite the fact that some of the shots are lovely.

I thought you needed a shallow DOF to get good bokeh! |

Disappointing score on a good image. Not sure why, as I thought the image met the challenge well. |

Shallow DOF and Bokeh may not be the same thing, but they are not mutually exclusive terms, so it would be bad to just see good Bokeh and penalize. It is possible to have both present.
- Once again, In my opinion, if a voter is unsure whether a shot meets the challenge or not- Rate the damn photo as if it does. It would be a terrible thing to hurt someones score and pride based upon mistake and ignorance.

hey I may be one of those people without N.D.O.F. in my photo, I thought low f stop like 1.8 was what created a nice bokeh
is that different from narrow depth of field? I am new to photography could someone please explain
happy with my score I expected high 4'S

It may also be a terrible thing to insult someone while trying to make your point... Admonishment requires gentleness. |

Bokeh is dependant on DOF, of course, the bokeh area of a photo is simply outwith the DOF. The difference is in technique, we use bokeh to make the background of a shot look more pleasing, we use DOF to pinpoint areas of sharp focus which creates strong bokeh elsewhere in the shot. There can be both in the shot; a shallow depth of field creates a richer, stronger bokeh and I think there are entries in the challenge where that isn't apparent.

People need to remember that a shallow depth of field does not always require there to be a front and back bokeh in the shot to spell it out for for the viewer.. anyone who knows enough about how varying degrees of bokeh are created, i.e are into their photography enough, should be able to spot when a background bokeh is strong enough to know there was a shallow depth of field present.. a more gradual bokeh would sugest its mainly due to objects getting further away from the main point of focus rather than a shallow depth of field..
I just hope many photos in this challenge don't end up with lower scores because some people require front and back bokeh to be present to spell out the difference to them.

Been lurking on the site for a few months, finally subscribed, and submitted my first ever photo to the Shallow DOF in Red. So far I am pretty proud of my score as a newbie:
