My dad is looking to get into dslr photography, and I'm trying to figure out what would be the best bet. I'm partial to pentax, but since he's coming in without any gear, I'm looking at everything. Mostly, he wants a good zoom, somewhere in the 70-250mm range, at some price under $800. Suggestions?

Don't pick a camera based on one lens. Have him go into a camera store and hold and play with as many cameras as he can to find which one feels best for him.

Most lenses are comparable across brands, and realistically, any lens will work equally fine when you are using your first dSLR. He can decide later which upgrades are worth his while.

Thanks for the advice, he should definitely figure out what feels good to him. But, for the sake of argument, if he's equally comfortable with nikon/canon/etc, a good lens at a decent price point could make a difference.

Different brands are fairly comparable. You will probably end up spending the same amount for similar quality no matter what brand you choose.

As competetive as the current market is, all the current players will have entries in your price range. It rreally boils down to personal preference. Play with all of them and pick the one he likes the best.
