Aside from the robot nipple thing, you guys are onto the basic function, but as herfotoman said, for what?

I will say this is not some obscure engineered component for work, but I did find it AT work. I'm pretty sure that if you work in an office, there's probably one of these there too.

Looks very similar to the retainer clip that retains the lock on my mechanics' toolbox (and the seat locks on my motorcycle), I suggest if it is found in the office, it retains the lock for a desk drawer or cabinet door.

It looks to me like it would be good for drilling holes in plastic or plexiglass.

Yes. it's commonly used for that, though it's called a countersink. They're made in various diameters and angles and are typically used by machinists.

The angle really makes a chamfer. I've found that step drills (Uni-bits) are pretty good for plastics.

Thanks for the tip about the unibit. I use them often for drilling conduit holes in plastic electrical boxes. For hard plastic like plexiglass, running a regular bit backward melts it's way through without cracking the plastic.

Hmmm all of the countersinks we have here are fluted.
