Interesting. Wonder what Canon will come up with, a consumer level full frame 8mp?

Thank god. I was just getting ready to buy a 1D. Hopefully it will be full frame or at least the 1.3 of the 1D.

I say it will be a d-90. 9MP, better AF, and better WB. This camera is the rumored successor. I have heard the price will beat the current D-60 by a good amount.

Who knows though.

Do you mean cheaper? I can only pray so.

Wow, I hope you're right about the price. I just hope that Nikon follows suit real fast. I've commited to Nikon for my DSLR ... my wife bought a 35MM SLR and I already bought a few lenses. I might get it this summer. We'll see how the piggy looks by then.

These are the 3 I have heard so far...

Same price as the D60 with 2-3 more mp's and a lot stronger build
About 3G with 3 more MP, 20 zone focus and better WB
A D60 with 2-3 more mp and better AF for around 1400

The rumors are flying on DPR and all the other canon sites out there... It is so much fun to watch... LOL

this has got to be one of the shortest product lifespans out there...it's all good, 'cause by the time i can afford something better, it'll resemble the hubble telescope.

Something like this I have my hands crossed for.

I don't know that I could cope with a higher MP sensor - my poor little 1.4GHz, 512Mb RAM PC is struggling with the output of a D60...

More featureful autofocus would be good. The D60's autofocus works fine but still requires focus/ reframing etc.

I don't want more pixels. I want a full-sized sensor, and, from what I hear, a little better AF.

I was literally about a week away from dropping the coin on a D60. Dunno what I should do now.

Guess the choice is wait 9 months for them to actually start shipping the 'next' one, pick up a D60 anyway if you can find one in stock, buy one second hand or go with a different system.

I doubt they'll come out with a full frame sensor though - doesn't that
screw up the 'high-end' line ?

Other full frame sensor DSLRs all seem to be in the $4000 or higher ball park. I'd suspect faster processing/ better connectivity/ better autofocus/ maybe a 1.3 multiplier or so - but still leaving room for the
high end cameras to sell.

Maybe not though. Could be like with the G2 - they might just change the body colour :)

All I know is my obselete D60 still seems to manage to take a picture so I'm not too worried.

So, that raises the question: do I wait around a month or two for D60 prices to drop in anticipation of the new model. Or are D60s so scarce now that I need to buy one while they're still available.

Why does this have to be so hard?!?

The only camera that Canon will verify that is newer than the D60 for the DSLRs is the 1Ds (11Mp, full frame, CMOS) with starts around $7500.

If they really do discontinue the D60, they will have to replace it with something in the same price range to stay competitive in the market.

I'm looking forward to the 1Ds later this year, but until then I'll keep using the D60.

BTW my D60 hasn't lost any quality or functionality because of this news either, Gordon.

I don't think they ever managed to fill demand for the D60 or get production up high enough to stock shops. I was in a 4 week waiting list 2 months ago. Sounds from news groups that places are still filling backorders and have been told not to take any more requests just now.

like any hardware, it's about your need. do you need/really want a camera now? or can you live with the one you have? if you want it i say get it. it's not like the d60 is going to be "unusable" anytime soon. believe me, there are going to be TONS of rumors floating around about the d60 replacement. going by past experience, those rumors will probably be 15%-20% correct and that's being generous. you wouldn't believe the rumors when the xL1s was announced or the gL2 (canon's top two miniDV cams). people went so far as to say the gL2 might have interchangeable lenses as well. in that respect i think it's safe to say you will not see a full frame sensor in the d60 predecessor.

so bottom line is, do you need it or want it now? if so get it and start shooting. if not, then wait.

If you read the post in dpreview, there is a link there //www.photim.com/Infos/UneInfo.asp?N=747 from France. And Canon France has confimed officially the discontinuation of the D60.
