When I first started I was constantly in automatic mode. Then as I learned more I started using Tv or Av modes and tried some of the other ones too. Now I rarely if ever am in anything but full Manual.
So what mode do you shoot in? |

| If I am using my strobes or flash I use Manual and will often use it for other things as well, If not in Manual then I use AV mode. So I would say 75% Manual 25% AV |

Aperture Priority most of the time. If using my wireless triggers, then I am in manual, since I have non-TTL capable Yongnou RF-602's. If shooting something that needs a certain exposure time, the shutter priority. I never use Auto, Program auto or scene modes.

Does it matter much???
I mostly use AV if not flash and M if there is flash (the flash is either manual or ettl depending). Sometimes non flash will be TV or M and sometimes flash will be AV. I have a stack of others with pictures but I don't understand them :-) |

When I can rely on the scene giving me a constant exposure I would compensate as I see fit, and use Av if I am concerned about DOF or Tv if I need a precise shutter speed. I have ISO on the second wheel to compensate when resulting aperture or shutter differ to much from what I need.
I use manual for anything else, including flash photography (I don't use TTL).
I never really used automatic modes but in digital it really is quite easy not to, and I know quite a few people who can't tell Av from Tv, but come up with better, more interesting photos than I do :D
Once, I told an old photographer that I was impressed how he could walk into an half lit church, set shutter and aperture, take only one photo and walk off. And his exposure was just spot on, no histogram, no lcd reviewing, nothing.
He laughed, shooked his head and told me about this guy he had worked for. Apparently some 40 years ago the man got a contract with a petrolchemical plant, for a poster size panoramic shot from one of their chimneys, which was a bunch of money. He just went on top of this 300 feet thingy, set tripod and large format in this big wind, took 4 shots to cover 360 degree and went down. No bracketing, no exposimereter either. I have seen the result and it's just great. He was not slack or unprofessional, he just knew what he was doing :)
I think, without digital I could have never started photographing :D

I use that quite a lot too, but it seems to activate often but randomly, probably I should check the manual again, it kind of, uhhh, sucks. |

No... just a curiosity question. If you get great photos in auto mode good for you. If Av or Sv or scene or whatever setting works for you.... great!! I was just curious to see what dpchallenge people use most often. I did a photo shoot last night and because I'm usually in manual mode... that's what I shot it with. but, during the shoot I was tempted to change it to Shutter priority because it was all about the motion blur and I tend to make adjustments to the shutter before I make adjustments to the Aperture... just a habit I guess. It got me to wondering so I asked. |

Same. When I first started with my old Olympus I don't think I ever took it off manual, and it was the control I had there that made me want a real DSLR. Since then though I've moved to either Av or Tv as I've found Manual to be too slow. Auto Exposure usually works pretty good but if it's off I just under or over expose how ever much I need, which is easily done with the back dial on my camera instead of going to full manual now. White bal always on auto and I adjust in RAW. ISO almost always at 100, though quick access to adjust ISO and a camera with better high ISO capabilities would be nice. |

I was opposite from most people.
I shot in Manual for years and have now transitioned to aperture priority. It is SO much easier, and I find myself missing a lot less shots because my camera is in the wrong settings. |

| Manual mode for me 90% of the time. The other 10% is P mode. I use that if I'm not in the mood to get a perfect shot (like snapshots with friends and such). Or I use it if I know I don't have time to expose for the shot exactly how I want. |
