Hi,

I'm a beginner and I want to get a lot more serious about photography. I've seen a lot of great photos on dpchallenge and I hope to someday enter my own into some of the contests!

I'm looking for a good dslr to buy right now, so if anyone has any suggestions, that would be great! Looking forward to learning from you all.

Hello and Welcome, Have a good look around and ask whatever you like. As far as the DSLR goes the first thing to consider is of course the price which will ascertain which models will be available to you.
There are lots of helpful folks on here with loads of knowledge, no doubt some will be along soon. Where abouts are you by the way?

Welcome. Don't be afraid to comment -- you will learn more about what you think makes a good photo from considering and expressing what you think "works" and doesn't in looking at the work of others than you will from the comments you receive on your own pictures.

Check out the many useful tutorials and articles under the Learn menu.

Try to decide early whether the score/placement you get is really important to you, or if you are more concerned with getting a response to your pictures ... this will largely determine what and how often you submit to the challenges.

Be prepared for the scores you get to be 1.5 - 2 points lower than you expect or would give yourself. Also remember that the "average" on our 10-point scale is 5.5, so if you see a picture you consider "average" you have to decide if it's just a bit better (6) or just a little worse (5). You can use any criteria you want to judge the photos, as long as you use the same criteria consistently for all all the pictures; there are probably 5000 Forum threads on voting methods and styles ...

johnvo,

Welcome! I'm new here as well, but I've been shooting for a little over three years now. My recommendation on a new DSLR is to consider how much money you have to spend and how interested you are in truly taking on photography. I started with a Canon Rebel XSi and that is certainly all I needed for some time! Don't get caught up in all the details at first, just know that any good DSLR (preferably Nikon or Canon in my opinion...and then even more preferably Canon, in my opinion... :D) will take your photography to a whole new level!

Happy shooting.
