Hi everyone. After playing around with different set ups, I finally got something nice.
What do you guys think? I want to try to get rid of that small white glare on the top of the center stone but I think this is a great shot. There is no post processing done except cut paste and resize.
I'll try messing around with the sharpness, contrast and saturation settings on my camera to make it a little crisper.

It seems very pale and lacking contrast and saturation. Any reason why you want to get it exact straight out of the camera? Tweaking it a little in photoshop or another editing program, especially sharpness, contrast, and saturation can be very helpful.

The glare on the stone is a reflection of something else in the room where you are working. If you want to remove that, you will need to suspend a dark backdrop of some sort ABOVE this setup to minimize those reflections. The dark backdrop will also create some dark highlights in the ring... it may also deepen the color of the stone.

I dont want to have to do any post editing because I will be going to school in another month or so and the people that will be left taking the shots have neither the time nor the skill to play around with adjusting the pictures.
Right now, I have a light below the ring and one above it. Then surrounding the ring I have glossy white cardboard to reflect the lights around. Before I put the cardboard up, the ring really reflected dark spots from around the room. I will try using a mirror next. |

If somebody else is going to be taking these shots, have you looked into something like a CloudDome which is perfect for this sort of thing? |

You can get some nice snapshots without any postediting but if you are trying to create some interesting images editing is very hard to avoid. Even cheap photolabs do some adjustments regarding contrast and colorsaturation when processing films from the people of the street. |

Ok, thanks for the help guys, I have been playing with it today and I got this shot, its my fav so far but my boss wants the ring and gemstone darker. I keep trying but then the background wont come out white. Any ideas? And yes, I know I could do it in PS.
Thanks,

try using multiple light sources, one to over expose the background and one for good exposure on the ring.

To get some contrast, try using a black card out of camera range but close to the ring to reflect onto one side of the metal and cut a bit of the light from hitting that side. Just try playing around with the position of the card. |

thanks, I'll get a piece of black cardboard and try that.
I have given in to my feelings of getting the shot perfect without any editing in paint shop. After using paintshop to see what it could do, I discovered that it takes 3 seconds to get a good looking shot look great. These are two shots that I took and edited the brightness and contrast levels in about 5 seconds each, and I am very happy with the results. Let me know what you think.
