I'm looking at buying the Canon 28-138 IS USM and wanted to know what people thought of this lens, and if there were any other lens in this range I should look at. |

Works for me. Great zoom range. Popular Photo has a review of it, along with other vibration reduction lenses this month.

A great lens, it stayed on my cam full time until I got hold of the 50mm f/1.8 mk1

I read that article which help spark my interest, but what about image quality, and sharpness. |

I was trying to decide between that lense and the Sigma 24-135 2.8-4.5 IF Aspherical and I went for the Sigma for a couple reasons. It was about $100 cheaper, it is faster, it focuses internally so the fron of the lens doesn't move which makes the use of graduated filters and polarizers much easier, and it scored slightly higher than the Canon on Fred Miranda's review. I'v heard it's a good lens, so if that's what you want, go for it.

OK, so I take that one back! LOL. I just got the lens yesterday and I haven't had a chance to try it out, but let me tell you, it's not a small lens! Like I posted in another thread, I have a 75-300mm lens that's lighter and thinner. But I guess that's the price of quality!

The Canon 28-135 is a fantastic walk around lens. When you buy in this range the lens will be on your camera most of the time. While Sigma and Tokina lenses are good I wouldn't use one 90% of the time. You spent a fair whack of money on the 300D so why throw a 3rd party lens on it as your main lens.
The Canon 28-135 is clear and sharp. The USM gives you fast quiet focusing.

Urm - the Canon 28-135 IS does rotate. It is frankly a pain when using a polariser. Otherwise the lens is generally okay. The images are sharp enough and the focus is reasonably quick.
The focus ring is tiny, like most of the mid range Canon lenses and the IS is one of the 'on/off' only lenses, without a panning mode.

Can the built in flash operate over the lens, or does it block the light? |
