I picked up a LX5 last month...love it.

Thought I'd start a thread for those using it to discuss, show some photos highlighting its capabilities, and ask/answer questions.

Starting with this question: If you are in A or S mode, how do you set exposure compensation? Yesterday, I accidentally got into exposure comp mode, and couldn't figure out how I did it, nor how to get out of it (it ended when I took the next pic).

Good idea Neil. I use my LX5 more than my DSLR's these days.

As to your question, to get into exposure compensation you have to press the rear dial (wheel), this will switch between exposure and speed/aperture and allow you to adjust the settings.

I need to get something small as well. So many times I see something I want to capture, but I don't have my DSLR with me.

I would take the DSLR, but I don't want to leave it in my car with 100 deg. or 0 deg. weather, not to mention theft or who knows what else...

(not to hi-jack the thread, just contributing, I hope)

So, maybe you could expand the thread title to include LX3? And then there are the DLUXes, but they might not bite. I love my LX3

Great. So.... How about favourite and/or much-exploited-by-you feature(s)/settings.

Oh, and the darn lens cap. Mine still dangles by the string and drives me nuts.

The engine I am putting in my Monte Carlo is an "LSX". Does that count?

I am just kidding around, no reply necessary...

Doh! :) That's nice and easy...I would have never tried that (probably would help to read the manual, if I knew where it was...)

Thanks!

Here's a TIP!

I bought one of these...very cheap...and the best screen protector I've ever used. Goes on without a fuss, stays on (so far, been a few weeks), and you can't even tell its there.

Clearer than any plastic screen protector.

One thing I did wrong when installing it...I didn't notice it had some company info on one side, and that it does matter which way you position it...unfortunately, as a result i covered a few pixels on the right side of my LCD with the non-transparent part. Had I put it the other way, it would not have been a problem. I've left it that way because it looks so perfectly installed, I didn't want to pull it back off, and I'm not missing much where I can see.

Highly recommended for an LX5. If you have a different model, make sure you buy the model that fits that.

I especially like the Dynamic B&W setting for candid/"shoot off the hip"/street photography. I don't shoot much in that style, but I was really pleased with the images I shot for the Henri Cartier-Bresson challenge using that setting, and it made me want to do more.

Neil, your link didn't take me to a screen protector..

Yes, the dynamic BW is very very cool, and for pushing the envelope the film grain in scene mode can be a kick (once in a blue moon).

What has become the deal breaker for me in looking at new cameras is the multi-exposure feature: I wish it weren't so buried in the menu, along with the 1 x 1 aspect ratio.

Interesting...I tried BW the other day, but I shoot only in RAW. So I was curious to see how it would come out.

What happened was it showed BW briefly when I imported into LR, but then just turned "green". It seems they may only use the green receptors of the CCD when shooting BW.

What was I expecting? I expected to get a normal color image in the RAW file, but I figured the preview would show me the BW.

I may have gotten different results of course on import if I had installed Silkypix. I didn't bother with that since I use Lightroom.

Interesting indeed. I only shoot jpeg, so I will do the BW - both dynamic and non - together with natural colour, then look at the green channel in Irfanview.

PS. Which BW did you choose?

I don't think it matters...I just tried again, and tried the different ones. The raw files are green (actually, they are more yellow than green).

If you shoot raw but have your camera "film" set to a B&W you will get this green effect. Just set your film to standard color and your RAW images will be color. Then convert to B&W in your software.

Just a heads up about a firmware update for the LX5. Although it was released a while back I have only just found out about it.

LX5 Firmware update to V2.0

Edit to add what it does!

I used my LX3 for many years....totally love this little camera! I took it everywhere with me, and the DSLR started staying at home. I found I enjoyed shooting video with this camera, and now I have a passion for it. I never made the leap to the LX5, but I thought about it. Instead, I leaped further and purchased a Panasonic GH2...micro 4/3 camera with an LX3 feel and size when compared to a larger DSLR. I love this camera! The video is fantastic...my video skills have gotten better, and my editing skills too. Now, I have the Olympus OM-D...another great micro 4/3 camera. I can say that my years with the LX3 was a bridge to where I am now, and I am so happy I arrived!! I still dust off the LX3 from time to time and use it....fantastic little camera!!
