This may be a stupid question; but I am new to dpchallenge. In an advanced challenge, it is acceptable to shoot on a chroma key background so that the background can be replaced with a white or black backround... Based upon my reading of the rules, this would be acceptable in an expert challenge but not advanced. Is this correct? Thanks.

The way I understand it, changing a color is legal in either basic or advanced editing rules, the difference is that you must do it universally in basic but may do it selectively in advanced. The so called 'selective color' adjustment (Photoshop) is legal in basic provided you apply it to the entire image and not selectively.

Using the chroma key method to make a background disappear and thereby reveal an background that wasn't there in the first place would be ilegal in either set of rules, I think.
