I was wondering if anyone has used any of the non-Canon Accessory lenses (.45/.5 wide angle or the 2X tele) I see on ebay. A company called Opteka makes some and also Digital optics. I like the prices but my instincts tell me that maybe I should stick with the Canon brands and pay the big bucks. Any thoughts on any of the G5 accessories would be apprecitated.

As a proud owner of the Canon G3 and all the Canon accessory lenses, I can highly recommend them. The telephoto adapter (TC-DC58N I think) is solidly constructed and the images are reasonably sharp. It does increase the chances that you'll see chromatic abberations in your photos (purple fringing), especially on bright white objects on green bgs.

The wide angle (WA-DC58N) is also quite nice. I've used it on many shots and am generally pleased with the results. It's not quite as sharp as I'd like it to be, but when used effectively it can produce stunning results.

But, the best part is the thought that Canon has put into the packaging for these adapter lenses. If you get two of the bayonet adapters (LA-DC58B) it's a cinch to swap them, and the carrying pouches that come with the lens adapter are large enough so that you can leave the bayonet adapters on the lens.

A while ago someone here did purchase some of those Opteka/Digital Optics lenses and ran some tests. If you search the forums you are sure to find them.

I have plenty examples of photos taken with the canon lenses in my portfolio, but notable examples are:
Wide Angle:

Teleconverter:

Hope this helps!

I bought the Eagle Eye lens for my Powershot G2 and the vignetting was aboslutely horrible. I had maybe 25% of the frame visible at best. They were great about accepting the return, but I was out shipping.

Don't trust anyone's test images unless you see vignetting, because without it there, you're just seeing a cropped image.

They are great for some cameras, but this one worked for crap with my G2.

AHA... found the thread.

The canon teleconverter does have vignetting at the wideangle setting of the camera, as do almost all teleconverters..
-- is a pretty much uncropped wideangle photo with the TC-DC58N teleconverter.

Matt and Myk, I value your input and opinions and will take this into consideration before laying down my hard earned money. Matt, you've got some great shots with the Wide angle and Teleconverter lenses. Thanks for posting them. I jsut checked your profile. Congrats of the ribbon for "Dock in the Bay". Well deserved.
