I gave it a quick 6 and moved on. A good basic flower shot, with good lighting, but nothing about it stood out as different from any others. I'm not a floral fan, however, and if I didn't treat 6 as the average, it would have been a 5. Nothing wrong with it at all, nothing special either. |
To be totally honest, I've have never taken a flower shot as good as this entry. However, like Yo_Spiff, I'm not a big floral fan and have little desire to take this style of image.

Wonderful idea -- putting it all in one place!! |
Yes, this is a great idea -- and to make it easier and to save space I think I'll just post a link to my whole portfolio ... ;-)
Originally posted by Yo_Spiff: Originally posted by FocusPoint: It can be a very nice background, but nothing is going on here honestly. I do understand it's an abstract photo, and nice colors, composition well, however it is extremely weak for a free study. My eyes are looking for a droplet LOL
...and I think that's why your score was low. |
See, that's the point. There does not NEED to be anything going on. All it needs to be is interesting shapes, textures and colors. I may be in the minority there, in that I don't think there always has to be some greater meaning. |
I thought this would do better, though I guess maybe not in what was essentially a free study ...
PS: I'm pretty sure my "Never Seeen ..." picture will qualify for this thread in a few days ...

How far back can we go? It is still difficult to understand why my little "Echo"
fared so badly in the Square Crop challenge. Anyone care to try?

I would love comments too. I have very thick skin. Please be as honest as possible about what is wrong with my photo and what I can do to make it better.

Curious as to what could have made these better. No constructive comments on either one. I'm thinking that the shot glasses appeared blurry to those that didn't see the reflection IMMEDIATELY...who knows. |

I had to spend a couple of weeks on business in Geelong (Australia) and spent a Saturday morning exploring the foreshore and taking some shots. I manage a few shots that I really liked but I processed this one first as someone wanted the shot for a project. I stuck it in the Free Study as a filler until I processed some of the shots I really liked (refer the Free Study Outtakes thread if you're interested). I took some better bat shots too (in my opinion) that I̢۪ll put in my portfolio later when I get the chance to process. Alas, I could not get internet access again until June 2.
Anywayâ€Â¦.. My two commenter’s seem to like this but I would appreciate any thoughts as to why it finished so low as it’s not too common to get a bat in flight during the day.

Oversharpened.
Stuck in the netherworld of not a lot of detail in the lighthouse and not a sillouhette.
Subject fatigue. People remember some very good shots of this lighthouse and compare you with them. |

But, Jason will reassure you NOT to feel bad about the halos in your image...

I dont usually take a photo and think 'wow'! but I did when I saw this one. It is the only photo I have submitted to DPC that I thought would fit the challenge and do well. How wrong !

I would still give it 5 though, not 4 or less.
here is what I mean

Oh yeah, that's brutal. But that was 2006 baby. Halos were in back then! And if not, then we didn't even know what they were. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! |

Thanks FocusPoint appreciate your feedback. I prefer her in the centre of the frame, though the crop works as well.
There is a slight tilt but the paved area is on a slope/incline

I'll put this one on. Not mine of course but felt it should have been ranked higher than it did.

I'll put up my first attempt at an insect macro-type shot. I kind of predicted that it would have a middling score with no comments and that's what it got. I can see that it is probably over-processed and the colour of the leaf is a bit too garish (i do like to make the 'natural', 'un-natural' in a lot of my stuff i guess). Still, i'd appreciate some comments as i do love the little buzzy things.

I was thinking this would do better than it did. The two comments I did get were very nice though, so that always helps.

I don't know if this one deserved a 6+ but I thought it was better than a 5.6XXX
Maybe I am wrong? |

I'd love some feedback on my recent FS entry. I know the FS is a tough challenge, but I wanted to see how one of my landscapes would place, since I think landscapes is one of my weakest genres. The images placed right about where I figured it would. I was surprised to see just how average it was: no 1s, 2s, 9s, or 10s. Exactly average! Any comments on editing this landscape would be particularly helpful : )
