I would be in favor of more post challenge discussion, silence during the challenge.

Here, here.
But...
Are we not discussing it already?
I am all for it but how do you control it?
I know that there is alot of "controversy" during the voting times but is this really the answer?
Maybe yes, maybe no?
I don't know!

Yeah after thinking it over, how do you not discuss it??? I mean, you'd have to cancel out the scoring thread too... To me, that's all part of the fun... |

I really don't mind the scoring threads where we can complain or brag about our scores or blame the "trolls" about the 1-5 votes they give our misunderstood brilliant images. It's the comments about the lack of quality in the entries, the number of DNMC entries, or comparing the entries to some other stunning image that meets the challenge so much better than the current entries do that bother me. I believe there are many more people who read the scores threads and the challenge discussion threads than post comments in them and these negative or narrow definition of the topic comments probably do subconsciously influence voting.
And, unfortunately, I also tend to agree with hahn23 that there are more than a few voters who vote down the competition, and not just of the ribbon winners either. :-( |

That can be quite entertaining at times, like the time I saw a post from DrAchoo about how many great shots were in the month's freestudy, soon followed by a post from Posthumous lamenting about how the quality of entries had gone downhill that month. A reminder that they are all just opinions, and you know what opinions are like.
I do agree that a post-challenge discussion of the entries and how things worked out would have a lot of interest for me. I think all it would take is someone to post a "post challenge discussion" thread and it would take off from there, probably petering out after 3 or 4 days when the next rollover hits.

I agree that many more people read the score threads and the challenge discussion threads that don't post their thoughts - a look at the stats of Views on the thread would show some support in that thinking (minus that of people looking again and again to see if there is further discussion).
I also have to agree with hahn23 statement that there is a culture of voters who are in the pool that are voting down the competition - how big or how small is unknown, but from a personal experience standpoint I think that is what I may be encountering in a current challenge. |

Exactly what I was thinking: Post Challenge Discussion could be a regular feature - maybe even a separate forum category could be created just for it (like the Outtakes) and it could be called The Post: (whatever challenge name is would go here) ;-) |

Totaly aggree with Judi, sometimes I feel like This is a school test and if you don't get all "the Words" correct you get nailed. One example I can think of is the Sentinel challenge, I sure didn't understand you HAD to use the word Sentinel in the title.. Thought getting a pix of a Sentinel was the idea... My Bad... I don't usually have a chance to read the Pre-Challenge fourms, so I can be off on "the norm" of the challenge.
I also would LOVE a post challenge discussion, The opinion of others as to why they felt a entry did or did not get scored would be (IMHO) most helpful.
And as I've seen in past threads, I wish there was a way if you gave below a 5 vote you had to explain how come. If the how come comment kept the voter's name hidden, then perhaps people would feel free to say why I gave a low vote to this and the photographer could gleem some insite as to what didn't work with their photo. |

I'd like that... However there is a risk of people start giving higher scores just to avoid the hassle of commenting - or do a selecting vote only to the ones they like. |

One thing we have to remember, it's the internet, the place where people can be rude and obnoxious and no one knows their names. So low votes are going to happen. That's a given. |

IMHO, any effort to "control" this is useless... I mean, at the end of the day, what really matters is the moment that person looks at a photo and decides what score to give...
Whether it is based on his/her personal taste or following strictly the definition of the challenge or just because he/she is envious of the photographer... All those "subjective" factors are impossible to control or measure...
Extremes are bad, and we have to be careful not to move from one extreme, where everybody is free to do as they please to another where we go into a controlled police state where Big Brother is watching over all our actions just to make sure we behave according to another set of "subjective rules" decided by whoever have the power to put them in place...
Trolls will always be trolls, bad pictures will always be bad pictures and in matter of taste, well... don't even go there... :)
