How about a challenge where the shot should look like a black velvet painting? That is, the b/g is black, and usually a fairly sparing use of form and colour, which in turn tends to be a little garish, is used to create the image. The subject matter tends to be slightly cheesy in nature - landscapes, bullfighters, galloping unicorns, flowers, Elvis (in fact so-called Velvises are highly sought after). It is primarily a North American art form, but surely Google can scare up some black velvet paintings to inspire the international crowd here.

Something like this maybe?

I mean, I know what a black velvet painting looks like. I even have one! LOL! But I'm not sure I could make a picture look like one without expert editing.

I have about 4 or is it 5 black velvet paintings...scary thought!! :-)

I did this by shooting (accidentally) in the wrong white balance, so I ended up with a very bleachy b/g and really weird colours on the flowers. Figuring I couldn't do any further harm, I just inverted the whole thing in PS. Eh wala...

So I think that Advanced editing might be enough...

I'd need expert editing. My dog doesn't know how to play poker.

Just shoot his big sad doggy eyes looking up at you with a mournful tear rolling down one cheek while he hopefully clutches his leash in his mouth...shoot downwards with the wide angle lens for best effect.

Or of course, you could always train the local squirrels to play poker ;-)

Since we're talking about black velvet paintings, has anyone here not seen the Velvet Wesley? For anybody who's watched any Star Trek, it's hilarious: //www.flickr.com/photos/wilwheaton/2782876432/in/photostream/
