...lens? Should I keep my 50mm? I selling my D90 body but would include this 50mm if I don't think it will be of use to me on my new D700. I currently have the 24-70 f2.8 and the 80-200 f2.8. Will that 50mm 1.8 do anything the 24-70 can't do?

Thanks,

Kenny

Yes. You can shoot at f-stops below 2.8. Sorry, couldn't resist. ;o)

There are definitely times when a prime is the superior choice. Since you already have it, I would say keep it.I have the 24-70 2.8, but I still go to my 50 1.4 and 85 1.4 with preference, using the zooms when more practical, but primes whenever possible.

nothing wrong with a fast 50. At f/2.8 it will be sharper than than your 24-70 at the same aperture. At least I assume so since the general rule of thumb is you get your best sharpest 2 stops down from your widest aperture.

Definitely keep the nifty 50mm 1.8, as it is a sharper lens than what you have, and you can use it in darker situations than your others, as it is 1.5 stops faster than your 2.8. A 50mm 1.8 lens is the best value of all lenses, it's light and an excellent lens to train your vision.
