I may be losing my concept of photo impressionism...I think expressionism defines these better. ? input? I'm confused.

Nobody really knows exactly what photo impressionism is so anything goes. So far we have had examples of abstracts, surrealism, expressionism, cubism, nature photo impressionism, moody B&W (I made up quite a few of my own terms :) Your photos fit very well with this SC.

One thing I learned from art history is that the people were not thinking of categories or definitions when they were doing it. They were just doing it. The categories were created by art critics. In fact, reading up on the impressionist painters I discovered that they rejected the notion that they were working under a label like 'impressionism.' So, in a way, it's a useful exercise to try to create something that will fit under a label but not a good long-term option. So yes I agree with Robert.

Ben's very much an in-camera guy, plus this was an actual entry in a FS, so I am sure the effect is almost entirely natural, not PP. Notice the lens he used; he's going to town with that lens, it produces an unearthly smooth and palpable OOF bokeh.

So it is a wide angle lens and he takes photos out-of-focus - more learning to do! Thanks

So the surfer image is mostly in camera with the exception of BW processing. The key here was using the shadow side of the pier. The surfer agreed to stand as still as possible, but relaxed. I used a 10 stop ND filter for the 2-3 minute exposure. This is actually a crop, a portion of the pier is in the original and is razor sharp. The blur is motion, not a defocused blur.

ND filters allow for some magical images. The first image I posted below was all in camera due to the 10 stop filter.

Bear is right, this lens has splendid bokeh, best appreciated wide open (see my recent Shoe and FS entries).

So he wasn't quite still so he blurred. In the FS walkers on the beach - did they pose for you and then ran off when the wave came before the end of exposure?

Yes, surfer was blurred by the waves, etc.

FS, self portrait. Again, 10 stop filter, f/2.8, I believe it was a 10 second exposure. The foot prints were erased every other set, so I made a foot print...ran back to the camera focused on the print. Waited for a new set to "erase" the sand. Then, using the cameras timer, walked in to the frame at a quick pace, then paused for 5 seconds to get my feet in the frame, then walked slowly away. A bit cheesy, but I liked it. My toddler is on my shoulders, she is the shadow over the water where I'm paused.
