Boy, that 200-400mm looks GREAT. I can't tell if it's a push-pull or not, though by the arrangement of rings I suspect it may be...
"One tidbit to watch will be whether it's a fixed-length design adjusted with a traditional zoom ring vs. the push-pull design that some photographers dislike about the 100-400mm product. And of course the price, size, and weight will help determine how deeply this lens will spread into the ranks of amateur bird and safari photographers.
Canon will show a prototype of the 200-400mm lens at the CP+ tradeshow in Pacifico Yokohama starting February 9."

It doesn't look like a push-pull design to me... I sure hope it isn't. Honestly, if the optical quality is up to the task, this will be one to make my tongue hang out! I think that I will be having a case of sticker shock at the price, though! |

On reexamination I believe you may be right. I share your hope it's fixed-length. I am sure it will cost $2500 or more though, so I doubt I will ever own it. Anyway, I just GOT the 100-400, and Penny'd probably kick me to the curb if I started whining about this one :-)

Fixed aperture tele zooms are almost always fixed length... Think 70-200 f4 IS, only bigger.. |

Was looking at getting a 300mm super zoom in the near future, but now I think I'll just wait. The 200-400mm looks very interesting, and I'm curious to see how the built in extender engages. |

oh man! 200-400. Sounds exciting. less of a range may make it sharper. Fixed aperture. The price will be a key, but I've been slowly saving for the 100-400 and this may be an alternative. |

You might see quite a few second hand 100-400s coming on the market - which means that they should be cheaper. |

Oh, *much* bigger. The 400/4 specification means that the front element has to be a minimum of 100mm (4 inches) in diameter! This will be a beast, and pricing will be beastly as well. The 500/4 prime is $6500 USD; a 400/4 prime would probably be more in the range of a 300/2.8 prime (about $4500), and this zoom will definitely be more expensive than that, but probably less than the 500/4. We're probably talking north of $5500 USD.

The new version of the Nikkor AF-S 200-400 F4G Ed VR II is now $6,500 so my guess is that the Canon will be the same. The old version sold for $5,500. Still my dream lens. |

Awww, you guys are bursting my bubble! I'm not paying $5,000 for a lens. :(
Well, like Sara said, maybe I can find a cheap 100-400 then. |

Hey guys. I just bought a Canon 50mm 1.2 L and am using it with a 7D.
I am thinking of trading this for a 35 1.4 L and a 50 1.4 for a little more cash.
Do you think keep the 50 1.2?? Or trade for something else? Opinions please. |

Says the guy with a dozen lenses ;)
It's nice to see Canon is finally getting on board with providing people with commander mode for flashes (the new 600D has it). In the announcement for the flashes though, they note "Both models also feature a built-in infrared Remote Release function to trigger the shutter release of compatible EOS models."
Anybody know more info on this? |

And add the cost of the mandatory built-in extender, plus new release premium, plus falling USD and I think about $7500
bazz.

Well, since we're all taking random whacks at pricing, here's my shot.
$3900, and they're gonna kill Nikon with this. ;) |
