I seem to remember it being the preferred WW-II technique for lobbing a handgrenade out of a foxhole ...

BTW: If you ever watch an NCAA "Girls" softball game you'll see them get a significantly heavier ball up near 70-80mph, underhanded ... though I suppose protesters wouldn't want to be known for their underhanded tactics ... :-(

But in the foxhole you need to lob it over your head.

In her youth, my wife was the pitcher for a softball team that made it to some sort of Ontario finals. She has since thrown her arm out and now can only pitch wild, but it's very impressive how fast it goes. You just don't want to be standing anywhere hear her. It looks like the underhand would take a lot more practice and technique to get good results.

Apologies if it appeared as I took offense by Strikeslip's comment, I did not. In fact, if there is one great value that I appreciate so much in here, is being able to criticize or offend somebody, anybody, without fearing being attacked, jailed or killed.

The west is by no mean a perfect society, but after experiencing life in the middleast for more than 20 years, I honestly feel that the US is as perfect as it gets in comparison.

the radio? AM? I hope you are referring to some fine FM news out there. soon to be gone if the rightwingnuts get their way. AM is pure hate and not worthy of comment here - all propaganda all the time. other than survival news (big urban centers doing traffic reports and snippets of news summary), AM has no value. now, if you are referring to the dying breed of listener sponsored community and university radio, then kudos to you. and please be sure to find the finest usa journalist Amy Goodman's "Democracy Now" - on most university/community and the Pacifica and their affiliates.

excellent! thank you for adding this to the thread. we are so propagandized in usa now. the corporate control of all information is truly sad.

You bet there is, a huge difference actually. On the English version, you rarely hear "facts" such as that US soldier are systematically and intentionally killing innocent civilians in Iraq, that Muslims are being persecuted in the US and Europe much worse than any discrimination against Christians in the middle-east, and that Israel actually deserves to be wiped off the map.

As I am writing this, the Arabic version mentioned that the US shipped weapons to the Egyptian police to kill the demonstrators and that Israel may had sent snipers inside Egypt to help with the killing also. My favorite report was last month where it was discovered that the sharks that attacked tourists in the red sea were trained by the Israeli Mossad specially for that purpose.

And you actually believe this tripe?

Did the sharks have frikkin laser beams attached to their heads? LOL!!!

As silly as it sounds, many people in the middle east do believe in this crap. Luckily, I escaped the country before my first brain-washing session.

Huh, totally disagree with you there my friend. No propaganda can work with all people all the times. People can observe, analyze and think for themselves you know. You want to see propaganda, look at the Egyptian state-owned TV today. All day long there was a protest with more than a million people. No mention to that on TV as if it was on a different planet. At night, the government staged a protest supporting the president, there was about 200 people in it. All of the sudden the main headlines on state TV: Hundreds of thousands marching in support of Mubarak.

One more thing, no propaganda can really succeed without censorship, Egypt again is a good example, when the protest begun, the government took the whole country offline, as simple as that, no Internet for a whole country, most satellite news station are being blocked too. In here, we may have propaganda on some media sources, but at least you have the choice to watch a different one. Unless you believe in conspiracies where all media outlet agree on the same propaganda.

Swings and roundabouts i feel, Sam. Swings and roundabouts.

(by the way, i'm not making light of the issue. I really get where you are coming from. I used to live in Egypt and still have many friends there who i am, of course, worried about. Still, i'm pleased about what is happening there and hope it can continue without any more pain and bloodshed. Fat chance of that of course.)

I mostly listen to NPR (usually KQED -- though we have a second affiliate, KALW*), sometimes to the local CBS affiliate**, and once in a while to one of the sports-talk stations when I need a break ....

We also have three PBS stations within broadcast range, with a total of 9 channels (including Kids, Spanish-language, MHz Worldview, and an all-Jazz radio simulcast). My TV still uses rabbit ears ...

Many public radio stations stream their programming, and many individual programs can be streamed or downloaded as podcasts; a few also post transcripts and pictures.

*KALW is actually the first public radio station in the Bay Area, and is run by the San Francisco School District.

**KCBS - Radio traces its lineage back to the first commercial radio station in the country -- they celebrated their centennial a couple of years ago. They also simulcast on an FM frequency ... :-)

The Bay Areaâs only all news radio station, KCBS started out as the hobby of scientist and inventor Charles Herrold. Giving birth to the worldâs first radio station, Herrold and his engineering students began broadcasting regularly-scheduled programming in 1909 on a 14-watt transmitter in San Jose. Originally, the station simply identified itself as âThis is San Jose Calling.â When radio licenses were issued in 1921, âDocâ Herrold was assigned the call letters of KQW. The station kept those call letters until CBS purchased it in 1949, broadcasting as KCBS at 740 AM on the dial.

Actually the biggest ifference between the English and Arabic versions are the commercials.

In the English version, the commercials are for Apex Tech.

In the Arabic version, the commercials are for the Terrorist Training Institute.

Oh, what a surprise. This thread has awoken DPC's most famous mentally challenged Islamophobe.

Hating 1 Billion members of a cult who hate me, the majority of whom who adhere to a playbook (the Koran) which says I'm an infidel and need to be converted or killed (the killer becoming a martyr) does not make me mentally challenged. Just a realist.

The USA and west would be a much safer place if more of us would become "Islamaphobes".

I tune in to various sources. One of which is Al Jazeera English. They were kicked out of Iraq by Saddam, then their reporters, blasted away in their hotel room in the Palestine Hotel in Iraq by a US tank. Then kicked out of Egypt and previously from Zimbabwe...

They're not perfect, but seems they're doing something right when they are pissing people off from either side of the fence.

I've been reading a lot of In These Times recently as a friend of mine has just started to work for them. Here's the ever interesting Noam Chomsky on Tunisia and Egypt.

As opposed to those who hate the cult you're a member of.

I'm pretty sure I'm not a member of any cults.

Don't be silly, of course you're a cult member. At least as much as Muslims are.

What cult would that be?
