A while ago I bought some cheap ND filters thinking that I couldn't really go far wrong with a bit of grey glass. I thought they were OK at first but then I realised I was getting a nasty colour cast and I wasn't sure if there was some blurring too (but that might be due to my cheap nasty tripod). I bit the bullet and got a Cokin P nd8 and I have just tried it out and it is so much better. In hindsight sticking a £4 piece of glass on the front of £500 of optical equipment is going to leave an obvious weak link. I wondered if anybody had found any economy filters that are actually OK or is it a case of you get what you pay for? I think I need a real tripod now.

Tiffen filters are usually inexpensive and do a decent job. You can find good prices on Hoya, too.
