I posted the "to ebay or not to ebay" topic a while back and based on the advice decided a more "reputable" website might be a good idea (that is to say, one with a decent return policy).
So, I ordered a used 30D from adorama.com, a website I've used before with no problems.
I got my camera today and it worked about an hour or two then got the dreaded and universal Error 99.
How horrible!
I reseated the lens and it worked for a few more minutes and gave the lovely message. Tried a new battery, same thing. It works, then gives the Error 99.
Anyway, so now it's going back, but not before I manage a shot for one of the current challenges!
*sigh* |

I've had to do a return with them before. If it's any consolation, it was no hassle. Good luck. |

That's a risk anyone takes with used gear. Adorama has a good reputation and I'm sure they will do you right.

If you have any issues with the return, it may be worth your time contacting HelenOster. She's a rep from Adorama, further detail explained on her profile. |

Make sure to read the return policy, I don't know how it works for used gear, but taking too many shots with new gear will push you outside of the easy return zone.

That's good advice about not taking too many shots, and I will definitely email Helen.
Oddly, this seems to be specific to one lens. I can't replicate the error with my other lens or with no lens installed.
Would returning this camera still be my best bet? |

try cleaning the contacts with a pencil eraser (a clean one) |

This is always fun.
I narrowed it down to my lens.
The questionable lens gives Error 01 on a 40D, clean lens contacts.
No other lens gives a problem (tested 3) on this camera.
The problem follows the lens.
I wonder if my old camera fried the lens too when it broke?

I'd like to add that I already have the return label from adorama. How amazing is that?
I hope they don't get charged from ups if I don't send my apparently perfectly functioning camera back, but that service seems amazing to me. On a weekend too! |

If there is an auto/manual switch on the lens itself, as on the Nikon lenses, try giving that a few clicks back and forth to see if the problem may be in that switch. You don't say what lens it is. If it has an aperture ring, make sure that it is also locked into the Auto position. Also, check to see if the camera will work in "full manual" or in "manual focus" mode with the lens.
My experience with Adorama has been good too. I bought an S3 Fuji from them "Parts Only" for $93. When it arrived here, I did a full reset and it worked fine for about 6 months, until I was able to upgrade to the D 7K Nikon. One of the buttons on the back finally quit working, but I feel it was still a great deal.

Helen's like a genie. Poof! There she is.
I would like to see her enter a photo contest here. Or just comment on some images... |
