Do the 50mm 1.4 needs a lens hood or no?

I always suggest a hood. it keeps flare down and protects the front element from nicks and dings. So yeah.

| While a hood never hurts, you can often get by without using one. This is especially applicable when you are using the lens on a crop body ( = less flare by default) or/and when the front element is recessed deep into the body, thus receiving more protection from the barrel. |

I always use a hood anyway (although rarely the right one) but on the 50f1.4 I think you HAVE to have it..... If you search around seems one common failure point is the focus motor caused from bumps on the mechanism and that 50 has a 1/2cm piece that sticks out. With the hood.... Nothing bumps that since the hood attached around the outside.
Doh... I'm an idiot... Just noticed your probably talking about the Nikon version... No idea but I would still vote for a hood anyway :-)

I never used a hood on my prior cropped bodies, with the 5D I find I need to.

I believe it is a good habit to always use a hood, even if only for the physical protection.
But as I use lots of primes and change lenses a lot I often get lazy and just pop the lens on without bothering with the hood.
