Someone on Flickr requested to use an image I took for their wedding shower invitations. I have no problem with them using my image, I just don't want to give it to them for free. I was thinking of asking them to pay for the use of the image.

I was thinking about asking for $5 for the right to use the image for the wedding shower invites. I figure that they could go out to a microstock site and find an image for $5 so If I ask for too much, she might just not bother with it.

I've never had anyone ask to use any of my images before. I just got into photography as a hobby within the last month or so, and this is still new to me. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to approach this?

Thanks!

Before you say anything, ask how much they are willing to pay, it might be more than $5.

I'd be checking that it was for a one off event / personal shower... and not that they plan on mass producing shower invitations as a commercial enterprise.

Personally, in the personal use situation, (not making a living from photography) I'd let them use the image for free on the proviso that it was only for the specified use, and that the photo was credited to me somewhere on the stationery with a URL to promote. Free advertising!

Of course, if professional photography is your game, I would expect the fee for image use in this way would be set much higher.

The thought did cross my mind that I should include some sort of provision that the image would be used only for the specified wedding shower invitations. I have no way of really knowing if she really intends to use the image for what she says.

Personally, It wouldn't be too big of a deal to me to let someone use my image for free. However, if you let someone use an image for free, that person begins to expect free or cheap images. It hurts the photograhpy in general when that happens. Although photography is a hobby I've started, I would like to be able to make a little side cash from it. I've began uploading images to stock sites, and I am interested in selling images. I would hate to give images away for free and have people start expecting that from me or other photographers.

At least they asked. The general public impression is that all images on the internet are free.

Write up a limited-use license which specifies the use, and tell them that your tax attorney requires you to always charge at least a nominal fee, and that in this case you can discount your usual license fee to ___ ($1-5 seems reasonable to me), along with a tasteful photo credit/URL listing somewhere in the invitation package*.

Considering the cost of most weddings these days, $5 is practically like being free, but it keeps you in a straightforward business relationship incase there's any problem later. Make sure you tell them that you appreciate that they asked first -- as mentioned, that's all too rare.

*If you sell prints or offer pro photo services, maybe offer a 10% discount to anyone referred from this event?

The limited use contract is a good idea. I can put together a limited use contract for her to sign, scan, and send back to me.

I'll probably just be honest with her and say that I'm willing to sell her the right to use the image for these invitations. I don't want to trick her into paying. I agree that $5 is almost free when it comes to weddings (I just got married in June).

I don't see it as a trick -- it's the very advise you gave yourself in your original proposal, just phrased "diplomatically." Say "tax advisor" if you want to be completely accurate ... :-)
