Ok the 2nd miner is on his way up. I was amazed to see how much the wheel turned before the capsule started to rise. Indicating cable stretch. Gotta love physics! |

I don't know how much work I am going to get done today, it's compelling stuff watching this incredible rescue mission. |

The second miner freed is giving an interview now. I am watching it on msnbc on my laptop. It is miraculous how they have survived. A few of the families will find their lives will have changed for good or bad as a result, through media coverage etc.
The sunglasses cost $ 410 US a pair. At least that is what is reported.
I can't stop watching it either, haven't been so absorbed since the coverage of 9/11 |

Donated by Oakley, actually:
"The terrifying Chilean miner saga is thankfully coming to a close today. To aid in the miners̢۪ rescue, Oakley donated special $450 sunglasses that provide 100% UV protection. The men will wear the glasses as they come up to the surface, to fight against any damage to their retinas which have not been exposed to sunlight in more than two months.
In preparation for the operation, the miners have been undergoing an exercise regimen meant to prevent muscle cramping. Upon their return they will be checked for infections and given medication to fight against germs that they are now vulnerable to."

Incredible! I had to stay up until the first miner made it out--I cried when he hugged his wife & kid. Fell asleep after that.
I know the oldest miner made it out -- have they brought the couple of miners with physical issues out yet?
Thanks to Simms for the heads up last night! I was so glad you posted it.

Me too. His son was obviously overcome with emotion when he first saw his Dad, and I just couldn't keep it together. What a fantastic moment for them. |

Fortunately, he could probably warm up with a nice hot bowl of ... chili ...
There is no issue of decompression -- the mine is open to the air through the shafts they've been drilling, and the pressure at the bottom is insignificantly different from that at the surface.
The "bends" come from breathing pressurized air -- the nitrogen dissolves into the blood and fizzes out as bubbles when the pressure is relieved (exactly like opening a bottle of soda) causing excruciating pain. Gradual decompression allows the nitrogen to come out of solution without forming bubbles. The miners have been breathing air at normal pressure throughout. |

I'm amazed. I didn't get to see any of it and couldn't follow at work other than a short break when I went out with my phone. By the time I headed home I heard that the last one had just been lifted out. I'm especially touched by the fact the president of Chile stayed there at the surface to greet each and every one of the miners as they came out of the mine. |

Didn't the wife of one of the trapped miners run into his girlfriend at some point? Was he in that reunion video. I didn't see anybody getting their butt kicked. |

As I understand it, the wife left and the girlfriend stayed for the reunion. |
