So much fun, but let's make it a little tougher and do it as minimal editing.

With special rules one would hope, lest it become an impossibility..

Doing the impossible just takes a little longer and means you need to get started on your entry earlier than the evening of rollover.

I like this idea, but let's make it a photo taken any time in 2010? Landscapes around here are not conducive to mini planeting! Whereas. most of us, I guess, will have been somewhere suitable this year at sometime.

Actually these work best with a photo taken specifically for the purpose. If you look at the first example in the OP's post, that is one of my own early efforts at it and you will notice it does not have a nice 3-d looking planetball like the others. The 3-d look requires a 360 degree panorama to get that effect. You can make one from any old panorama, but it will not work as well as something custom shot.

Wonderful idea - that would be fun to vote on!

The thing is, all the photos, if done well will be mostly the same, with different scenes of course, but its not very challenging if done well, meaning alot of them would be brilliant and hard to vote on.

I have seen some very creative interpretations of the planets, and I think DPC would surprise the voters and come up with some real gems.

Could always do it as a side challenge.

This sounds really fun! Advanced editing though, with extra rules about using the polar coordinates filter. Minimal editing wouldn't work, it would seem to me.

They are a lot of fun. I need to do better with them (hard to get stuff to match up!). Not sure I'd do one for a challenge, but I have fun doing them just for me. And yeah, a 360 panorama is a good way to start.

This was a 5 minute conversion of my old boring Yellow entry using the original uncropped version. So while it was not a panoramic, it still looks pretty cool as a world.

Ironically I have been shooting scenes this week while on vacation in Thunder Bay, Ontario. I had seen some images of a local photographer who shoots exclusively in this style. After remembering that I had scene some mini planets here at DPC I craved to make some myself. I look forward to getting back to my computer to try my hand at this images I shot and to a challenge as well.

Here's a DPC tutorial
. I suspect that taking 68 photos added something to the final version, but I also suspect you can use far fewer and still get a very good result.

If this isn't chosen as a Challenge, we should start an SC for mini planets:)

Agreed. I already have something in mind that I've been wanting to do a mini planet of.

Just beware that if you jump in and make it a side challenge, it sort of eliminates the viability of making it a regular challenge anytime soon. If you really want it to be a regular challenge with voting I suggest you hold off for a little while ...
