Requesting an Assessment
"Under Western Australian Law, you may be asked at any time to complete an Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment to show that you can drive a vehicle safely & legally. Even if you are an experienced driver, you may be asked to complete this assessment because of concerns that your driving skills may be affected by your medical condition/s.
An Occupational Therapy Driver Assessment is intended to ensure that you can drive safely and legally. You, the Department of Transport, your family, your doctor, your therapist or anyone else involved in your care may arrange an Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment."

I know and I do agree with you. But as all of you will know there are times where just because you agree with something...doesn't mean you are happy about it. LOL! I am relaxed about it now. Just neded to vent. |
Sorry to hear about the transportation issues - I understand completely that as the Goddess of Hearth and Home:-) you have things that need doing for your kids, family and household and with being grounded it is VERY tough (speaking from personal experience of being 'grounded' after major surgery a few years ago).
I don't suppose while you are waiting to get clearance, is there anybody - a friend or another relative that could help out with the transportation issue? Even if it is one night getting your son to a game and back every little bit of help from your larger support group helps. As mentioned that you live in a location that makes this even more challenging but it never hurts to ask.
Can you perhaps have a friend or trusted stablehand take care of the horses for a day or two?
As for groceries - does your supermarket have a program that you can call or order through the internet your food list and they will deliver? A couple of places here in the states have that program (and a quick Google search shows that some parts of Australia have that service) - for a few dollars for one or two times it might be worth the cost of time and gas of getting to the store.

Usually, people who are unable to use one of their arms have a knob on the steering wheel so they can turn it more than 160 degrees. The problem is, if you cannot use one arm effectively, it would be hard to make a really sharp turn to avoid a child running into the street. Think about it -- with two hands, to turn really fast, you can go hand over hand, or if you had a knob on the wheel, you can turn it that way. If you are driving one handed, you are so much more limited in an emergency situation.
I'm so sorry it's frustrating.
Bear has a good point; it's worth looking into! :D

In the meantime, it's likely that an explosion was due right along now,
after all you've been through.
If it wasn't driving, it would probably be something else to set you off.
Hang in there, Judi - with your positive outlook, you'll get past this too!

I slept on yesterdays hiccups and am feeling clearer about it. They don't realise that I am a stubborn female and won't give up. So, they have put a barrier in front of me. Yes I agree with the legalities of it...but that doesn't mean I should give up. I am going to prove to them that they can't stop me. I am going to ride the pushbike and get the kids to school. I have organised someone to take my son through to the coast. I won't be able to see him participate but at least he can be there. I will ride with the kids to the horses and take something with me to fight back the magpies. It might release some of the built up frustration in me..LOL!! I am going to get through this. I have dealt with so many barriers over the weeks...this WILL NOT stop me.
I apologize for blowing off some steam to you all. I just had to let it out. Thankyou for not turning your backs on me.

Blow off steam all you want Judi, that's what we're here for :). Glad your feeling better. You're an amazing stubborn female and I've no doubt that you will pull through all this even stronger than before. |

I am feeling better about it now. The morning wasn't too good though. My physio has banned me from riding the pushbike...sheez. He is going to be spending my next appointment here in my office going through the layout and seating etc. My OT will also be doing a home visit to help me get through everyday chores, like peeling vegetables etc. I am also not allowed to swim yet but have to spend time in the hydrotherapy pool with the jets of water and then a physio will be coming to the pool to work with me. They don't want my neck turning much yet. So it has been an awkward day dealing with confinement and accepting the changes. They have made a 6 month program restricting what I do with work and homelife and stress, slowly building it back up over 6 months.

I cant imagine just how frustrating this must be for you!
Trying to find a silver lining though hopefully the time will fly and before you realise you will be 6 months down the line & doing fantastically.
Until then you have all of us & your family to vent at if you need to :)
And hopefully all this positive DPC energy will speed you along nicely |

I am doing okay. I have been going stir crazy being locked in the house. I have never been one to be caged in. So a friend of mine took me out to the damn on Saturday to look at the overflowing dam wall just before the rains hit this week (they have already started) They are predicting floods this week. Then today he took me to brunch before we went visiting and then spent the rest of the day eating cheese and nibblies on the front patio whilst my children were at the movies with friends. As we sat there we watched the clouds billow around and the rain come down.
It was a great end to a difficult week. The towns phone line got cut on Thursday. Most people got theirs back but we didn't. They said we won't get ours till 20th September...so they have diverted all my calls to my mobile...but that restricts me calling out due to the high cost of calling from a mobile. So I really felt grounded by that stage.
I am still finding that my memory is not complete when others speak to me of times and people that I should remember. I am not making daily lists of what I do during the day to try and help my short term memory. My hand still has not much strength. If bottle tops are loose than I can open them, otherwise I have to use my other hand. My vision is still a bit blurred and doubled on the right side but I get around it. And I have to be careful on the phone with too much noise around me.

I've got one of these - works a treat (although you're still left trying to hold the glass part of the affair, but you can fix it :)). Works the same way as those chain things for undoing recalcitrant oil filters.
Looks like you'll just have to let the rain rain this time around - that's some delicate shit on top of your neck there - take care of it. |

I'm really glad you have improved so much, Judi, and hope you continue to make a speedy and full recovery. I can understand your frustration at your limitations, especially when it feels like they are being imposed upon you, but I'm sure you will get through it all, and maybe find that some limitations actually give you some needed healing time. Thank you so much for making the huge effort to comment on the entries in the Sunshine After Rain challenge. I really appreciated the one you left on mine. |

Hi guys...I guess it's time for an update. This last week has been interesting to say the least. I have had a few physio, OT, hydrotherapy sessions in the last week. They have helped and I now able to cut vegetables. My vision went whacko last week so now they want my eyes checked to eliminate that area. My vision hasn't been good since the fall but it went really bad last Friday. My hearing seems to be improving on the left but the right is still affected. I am unable to filter out noises to allow me to concentrate on one noise. I tried to do some lower body exercise on Saturday and stuffed my neck/shoulders area by Sunday. On Monday I rode my bike to horses (against my physios wishes) and my son had an accident that required stitches across his kneecap. So I walked him home, dodging the swooping Magpies), so by the time I got home I was in agony. I then had to take my 3 kids and 2 other kids up to hospital for 2 hours. I was on my own so we walked everywhere.
I had OT and physio again today and they strength tested me again and whilst I didn't pass my medical for a drivers license, I can say that my hand has doubled it's strength since last week but is still only 1/6th of the strength of my left hand. A small milestone but a big one in my eyes...I am improving.
And then to top the day off I pulled a ribbon with my image. I am so ecstatic. I have struggled so much with creativity since the fall and of course editing. So when the idea came to me and I had the opportunity to shoot it I was wrapped. The model (a good friend of mine) drove me to pick up a costume and then to location. I then edited the next day and it worked. I didn't care about the voting. To me it was like being faced with a puddle. I wanted to jump that puddle (the shooting of the image and the editing), without knowing or caring how I landed. And I did jump that puddle. I didn't fall at the other side, I landed on two feet. An amazing feeling. And then to actually score well was a huge bonus.
So...that was my week.

Your ribbon inspired me, Judi. Inspired me to get whacked upside the head. ;-)
Thanks for the update. Sounds like ups & downs, but forward progress overall. That's a positive in anyone's life. Cheers. |

Great to have the update, Judi. When we heard from you recently, (as I recall it) it was raining, the power was out and your expensive mobile was the only communication available. I had visions of you stranded and maybe gloomy.
HA!
The usual three-ring circus seems to have been in full force at your house. Congratulations on all the improvements you are making in your own body and frame of mind. dang, lady, you've got determination.
And yes, that latest image of yours is pure art.
ETA: No, not that art, Art! :))

Thanks for the update on your condition. Your typing and writing skills are back too. Maybe not as fast as you would like, but you are making perfect sense with every line now, which shows that your concentration is coming back.
Riding a bike takes balancing skills, so that must be coming back too.
Your right hand doubled in strength? At that rate, you will be able to toss cars around in a few weeks LOL. Maybe you will at least get to begin driving soon.
I hope your vision clears up soon. Being very tired can cause your eyes to have trouble focusing, so try to get some rest between your adventures.
Oh, and one other thing, your photography skills are recovering. I was very happy to see your new image on top of the pile this week!
Congrats on the ribbon!
