I haven't had a lot of time to read the threads too much but even still I am embarrassed to say that I just noticed this thread. Very sorry to hear about your accident Judi but I am glad you are making a recovery.
As to the original question? My favorite picture is the one that Judi entered into the Free Study for this month. ;) |

I forgot that you had entered the free study!! I have to go look!
It's been awhile since an update: how are things going? Is the voice staying around? Are you feeling any better?

I am doing well. I have got my voice back. I even yelled at the kids the other morning. But I struggled to hold my child from running during a bad moment. That was hard. As I am improving I am noticing other problems. I thought my vision had improved but now find I still have blurred right peripheral vision and I have problems reading. I was always a fast reader but now can't seem to focus on words. My eyes jump all over the place so it takes me a while to read a sentence. I can however read upside down better than normal. I think cause my eyes focus on the shapes of the letters instead of looking around for other words. I find I still get stuck on some words and can't remember a lot of words when I am talking to people. My memory is jumping all over the place...still trying to find timelines. I ahve regained bad memories...but I can handle that. My hand has good days and bad. But it is now starting to register on pressure tests...but only just. So there is improvement. My hearing is painful. It seems to be louder so I startle a lot and too many noises confuses me.
I can't get a doctors appointment to get medical clearance for driving so I am still grounded, which is frustrating. I have also noticed my walk is not as fluent as before...but it is heaps better than what it was after the fall. My toes had curled up and I was pigeon toed...but with work I got there. I still get headaches and heavy feeling on the right side of the head and my decreased sensation has improved some...but still don't feel mozzie bites on the right side of my body.
So in all...loads of improvements, but other problems starting to arise.

Thanks for the update, Judi. I'm still praying for you and I like to hear your good news.
Little bits... little bits... you'll get there! |

Good to hear your news, here's hoping you regain everything else soon! Have you had past concussions? They say that cumulative damage can exacerbate a new head injury. I'm really careful now because of 3 in my past, and while I know you don't think a helmet would have helped you in this case, I find it somewhat reassuring to wear one both on horseback and while driving my Twix-pony. |

I have had other head/neck injuries...but I dont think I have had concussion before. I agree about the helmet. I think this was one of the freak cases where a helmet would have made it worse. I will be wearing a hat in future.

Judy, my Aunt was struck by a falling tree many years ago. She could not lay down any long term memories for almost six months. She said that one day she just woke up. Her husband had to tell her what happened during that period of time. She is now perfectly normal but for a six month gap in her memories. So here's hoping for your awakening in the near future.

Is a mozzie bite like pins and needles? I have been following this from the start and I'm happy your conditions are improving. |

Mozzies love biting me....so to not feel them on one side is a worry, especially when I find all these red bites on me. And I definitely have my sense of humour back. As I say to all my visitors now....pay back is a BITCH....I don't remember what they said to stir me...but I know they stirred me when I couldn't talk...so now they are all worried...lmao!
I had a talk with my students about the accident this morning...and explained to them how to make sure they take safety precautions when doing things...I think it sunk in.

I'm kind of envious -- there are some things about the last six months that I'd just as soon forget... ;-)
Seriously, I'm delighted that you are doing so well; just don't over do it.

Hope Sending Hope
Sunlight is everywhere to be found
Hope sending hope to the inside far true
High heavens bluer drifting in sunset through
In your eyes here and there and all around
Playing and moving distant in tomorrow
Giving from its love that will linger on
Moods to remember from a world that's gone
Feelings of care that no one can borrow
A day is in evening saying its goodbye
With yellow red burning into the dark
Dreams to linger on to the calls of night
Clearing reality from luminous sky
Each of its dreams from outer there to spark
Losing each shading to darkish mauve sight
Peter S. Quinn
I wish you a fast recovery. Get well soon. Dont give up on hope! This is one of my favorite photos of Judi.

Isn't it the case that an image is formed 'upside down' on our retina, and it's our brain's job to flip it the right way around? - This could explain why you're finding it easier to read upside down. |

Today I blew my top. I lost the plot in a big way. I went to the doctor to get medical clearance. Apparently after a head/brain injury you have to get medical clearance to drive. I drove all last week until I was informed that I didn't have medical clearance. Nobody had told me I couldn't drive but apparently for insurance reasons I have to have medical clearance. So I stopped driving on Thursday, like I was told to do, until I could see the doctor today. I went in there all happy thinking I could finally drive again.
Did he give me clearance? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO he said because I don't have full strength in my hand I am not allowed to drive. I pleaded with hinm and said my car is an Automatic with power sterring. I use backroads and take it slowly. He said NOOOOOOO. He said he has the final word and cannot say when I will get it back. I was furious. I needed medical clearance for the head injury...not the freaking hand. He knew I was upset. I left there and said to Damion that people with one arm or a broken hand don't need medical clearance...so why the freaking hell am I not allowed to drive. I lost it by the time I got home. I couldn't hold it any longer. My poor friend had turned up for coffee and she tolerated me screaming and swearing for 2 hours. I had told the doctor...I have kids that go to school and have sports that go well into the night. I have horses to feed that live a good 20 minute walk away (thru magpie swooping areas). He said...walk. Oh yeah right...thanks mate....so I end up back in hospital with magpie gashes or hit and run kids from walking the streets during th enight. Let alone groceries or other errands to run. Hubby works and my mum-in-law flew home this morning. I am livid. Next week is school holidays...so I guess I am stranded to stay at home instead of taking the kids somewhere. My son has basketball camp this weekend, 300kms from home. Can I take him and watch him? No...cause I czan't freaking drive. DAMMMMIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!
Edit to add. I know I still have memory and other issues...and I do understand the protocol...but I was just angry that he grounded me for my hand and didn't even check my other issues.
Sorry for going off.

I am calmin down. Just got really angry for being grounded again. I could handle it if it was for the head injury..but for something simple like the hand...that was too much.

I know and I do agree with you. But as all of you will know there are times where just because you agree with something...doesn't mean you are happy about it. LOL! I am relaxed about it now. Just neded to vent.

Being that I live in a small farming community and have to drive everywhere since it is the only means of conveyance available, I can truly appreciate the aggravation you are going through.
Having said this, I am certain that you can appreciate the doctor's position in this regard as he could be held liable if your injuries led to an accident. Not being Australian I truly cannot comment on civil liability issues, but I can assure you that where I live, that doctor would be held liable should any untoward event transpire.
Considering the stunning progress you have made to date, I am convinced you will heal right quick and will be driving again real soon.
The best of luck to you,
Ray

Thanks Ray. Yes...he is doing it for my and everyones elses safety as well as insurance reasons. And yes...in a small community a car is your main means of transport. We don't have public transport here.

I dunno if where you live still counts as a small farming community, farmer Ray, but yep. Living out in the country, you have to have a vehicle or you're stuck. As for the hand, well, you pointed out that you're driving an automatic with power steering. Doctors can be so flipping daft, so I understand the rant! But you are clearly improving at an amazing rate. Keep it up and be careful. |
