I'm in awe of this photographer... Skye Johanson Photography. I don't think I can post her link so you'll have to google her :) Her pictures are stunning and her editing is beautiful. Anyone have any ideas on how I can achieve this look? I'm a children's photographer and would love to learn some of her tricks! I need a little help in photoshop! |

Unless I'm missing something, all you are seeing is muted colors. Take an original photo ... brighten the colors a bit ... then create another layer on top and change it to B&W ... then turn the opacity of the B&W layer down to let some color shine thru. Pretty easy actually. The great part of the images is the setup itself, not so much the post processing.

She also uses a skin smoother like Noisewear Pro or Neat Image. : ) |

I will have to try some of that. I've been trying lots of different things but can't quite get the look. I love her "chocolate" tone pictures too. Do you think she is just changing it to B&W and adding a tone to it?
What I also find amazing w/ her is that her pictures look great wherever you view them...any monitor, any computer. I have real issues with that! |

Yes, these are plugins for photoshop. Google "Noiseware" or "Neat Image".

She's also playing with the curves of the RBG channels and adding slight blue and/or red cast to the dark shadow areas and washing out the black tones (but using selections to not affect points of interest like the pupils) to give a slight timeless washed out antique quality to the image. She's changing most of her white areas and skin tones towards the yellow spectrum.

One thing I notice is she's using very soft, flat lighting, an umbrella directly behind the camera and high up. She's also using a very shallow DOF, she's shooting with quite a wide aperture on a relatively long lens.

trying to fight for the pause/mute button while the images are loading is quite a battle. sorry just had to point out how music on a webpage is dumb (at least autoplay), at least put the controls on the top. I closed it after my battle

I couldn't agree more. I just closed the webpage as soon as the music started.

I don't get it. The pages loaded immediately for me and I was scrolling through the shots when the music started. It did not seem to interfere with viewing at all, just a lag for the music to begin that I did not even know was happening. What are you guys using for a browser. I was on IE8. |

There are other plugin to get soft skin without resorting to noise reduction. Nik Color Efex Pro has one setting called Dynamic Skin Softener. It also has choices for toning down the color as she has done called Pastel, as well as a Glamor Glow and the like. They and many more in the package are all are highly adjustable. |

Pix were really good.
Music was really bad.
I looked for as long as I could stand the music, then exited before bothering to look up her contact information. |

She obviously is *very* good at getting the little ones into some very creative poses. I'm awed by some of the poses she achieved. I like what she does with the props, poses, soft/flat lighting, etc., but not so much on the look of the processing in some cases. In addition to the reduced saturation (pastel look) she has reduced contrast to a point that it kinda bothers me. Looks like an old print that has faded, and not in a good way.
As far as the skin smoothing, if she is doing it she is doing it very subtly. I do not at all recommend some of the previously referenced tools, specifically NeatImage and the like, for this application. They are not meant for the purpose, and tend to produce a very unnatural look. IMO, one of the best available tools is the simple Gaussian Blur tool built into Photoshop. When applied selectively and at reduced opacity, it produces top-notch, non-destructive, adjustable results in very little time. I truly question whether such a technique is needed with the typical infant's skin, however.

You guys must not have young children playing games on your computer. My sound is turned off most of the time, so I don't have to listen to duck races music. :D

music controls are at the bottom of the page (about 20,000 leagues down).
I love the photos and am also curious about how she gets those poses. Many of the babies are asleep - maybe she has the parents use sleep deprivation for a couple days before the shoot. |
