Sounds like a great voting method to me..

OK, in my opinion it is a very poorly applied use of HDR as well. So the processing is not very good (again, in my opinion), the subject is basically indiscernible (although I'm pretty sure I've got it figured out now), and the title does not help me in the least...doesn't leave much other than the Brown.

I'll all for giving "clever points," but this one didn't cut it for me. To each their own I guess.

No need. Did you leave a comment for the photographer so they at least know why you gave it a 1? Though that might not be necessary.

Why do you need to be able to discern what it is? What would you do in an abstract challenge? ;o)

Are you defending your own image...? :-)

- Alex

Nope. It's not mine. Just questioning why an image needs to be recognizable.

They don't...usually. I can't go into why I feel this SPECIFIC image received a 1 without totally giving away its identity. I'll be glad to discuss it further via PM or after the challenge ends.

- Alex

Whoa, the quoting got jacked up there...but I think you asked if I left a comment. Yes I did. I always leave comments for scores of 3 or less.

Sorry about that. When the quote string gets too long I sometimes forget to scroll before I start typing. LOL

Yes. I asked if you left a comment and think it's great that you did.

The low votes are the hardest to leave comments on. I feel I need to make a positive statement about the image before getting to the criticism and most of the time can't think of any so don't leave a comment.

How do you know it's Topaz? The look can be achieved through other means as well, one being the use of HDR software like Photomatix or even just the HDR process in Photoshop. ;o)

I just thought it was (be interested to know if it was used in allot of the images though), i didn't vote any image down because i thought it was topaz.

You're probably right on some but not on others. It will be interesting to see what was used in each of the entries.

Topaz is a sophisticated tone mapping software with extra bells and whistles appended. Tone mapping is an integral part of HDRI; it is, by definition, "an HDR technique". So yes, Topaz, or at least the core function of Topaz, qualifies, at least in my book.

*Technically*, you could argue that any submission that did not involve merging multiple original files is "not HDR", but there's no way of telling which is which. Anyhow, there are plenty of ways to produce "quasi HDR" without using Topaz or Lucis Arts.

Speaking for myself, I accepted going in that the reality of this challenge would be that it is a challenge to produce an image with the "HDR look"; I didn't expect that natural-looking HDR will score especially well. I made the mistake of entering one of those last time around, and it didn't particularly well. So this time I got more aggressive, and it's doing just fine :-)

I was one of the folks who thought your previous HDR entry was an excellent example of the technique. I recall giving it a fairly high vote. Your statement is also interesting, because I did the opposite. My entry this time has less of the stereotypical tonemapped look and is doing well, though it will probably not get as high as my previous HDR entry. I do see a lot of natural looking usage of HDR in this challenge.

I noticed that as well; and I'm aware of one particular, relatively natural, HDR shot that is getting a VERY high score, so as usual I may be behind the curve here :-) But since everyone (especially you) is always giving me a hard time for my extravagant usage of tone mapping & Topaz, I figured I'd be foolish not to indulge in excess for THIS challenge, which is just begging for same.

And anyway, as I said, I'm scoring just fine :-)

I didn't say it was not appropriate!

OOps. Missed the 100 mark. Anyways, here it is, doing better than I expected, considering it was an unusual choice for HDR;-):
