This is ridiculous... SINCE DPL I haven't had a score under 5.8.... :D |
I benefited from our time on YoungGuns too... I've got two entries in the 6's, one over 6.5, however, my SP has recently dropped from a 5.5 to a 5.1... |

:-)
That's why I used the word 'impractical'. I don't know how many of us understand the main purpose of this technique (certainly I didn't until recently) : to combine visual information from a relatively wider range of frequencies into a single image. Without seeing the original exposures that focus on smaller/overlapping bands of energy over the light spectrum, how can one say if the HDR technique was employed effectively or not?
But as you pointed, this could be more useful as a post-voting exercise, just like the side challenge we have open, which I am looking forward to for learning purposes.
Btw I have chosen a clear winner for this challenge, hopefully that entry will ribbon. Generally it's more than one that get a 10 from me, but this time there's only one. There are a few 9's though, and more 8's...
Originally posted by cpanaioti: Originally posted by Prash: It would be impractical to expect it on DPC, but if an HDR challenge provided thumbnails to the exposures used for each entry, the voters would be able to appreciate the final image's dynamic range more.
It's not always apparent from a single image how it captures a radiance map with range larger than what the individual exposures do (unless the final result fits the stereotyped tonemapped HDR popped architectural / landscape images from tutorials;)
That said, I am still happy with my score:) |
I think this would be good if the photog posted links to the images which made up the HDR in the comments area so after the challenge we could see the range. During voting it should be the final image that is rated, not the process of how it was achieved. |

Ouch it was just a 6.200 with 64 votes. Someone must have changed their mind and decided they really didn't like it after all. It's so sad when you see a score drop without the votes changing...sigh. LOL

It's an odd and uncommon feeling for me when a couple of 6's in a row actually LOWER my score. LOL...a bit surreal. :)

I can see how disappointed you are. If you'll let me know which one is yours, I'll make sure to slap a 1 on it. But only because you asked. |
Thanks for the consideration ;) but I think I'm cool.

That is why it really doesn't matter what vote you get...once you get to a level of improvement...a vote of 6 (which is a nice vote here at DPC) can kick your a$$...and a 5 is a total turn off..and God forbid a 4...wait till you get to where you will cringe at getting a 7...lol (believe me I know)...so all this BS about " I just got a such and such.." is that... it's BS..and it just doesn't matter...as Bill Murray says...it just doesn't MATTER..it just doesn't MATTER...lol

Well they are out there...you know the voters who should be ashamed of themselves. I got a bunch of 10's, 9's and 8's today, and I just got two votes that averaged 2.5 for a total of 5 points. So most likely a 2 and a 3 which I can honestly say were not deserved no matter how you feel about HDR. Hopefully just a little set back in the end.

I did give 1 entry a score of 1 because, frankly I don't have a clue what it was/is and the title isn't helpful at all. Other than that, no other 1's for me.

Ha... I so know which one you are talking about... That would clearly be the work of posthumous or one of the fans of that genre.. I do know that whoever entered it, they likely consider your vote of 1 a great success, as they've managed to get you to question and examine the image, and left you confused. That's pretty much a home run for them..
I'm kinda surprised you can't tell what it is.. Go have a look, I promise, although it's a bit of a mess, you can really discern what the subject is if you try... Keep an open mind, those folks will enter some of the oddest things... :) FWIW, I gave that image a 7 just for sheer cheekiness...... :) |

Since this is an HDR challenge I rated it based on how well HDR appeared to be applied. Who cares what the subject is. ;o)

OK, in my opinion it is a very poorly applied use of HDR as well. So the processing is not very good (again, in my opinion), the subject is basically indiscernible (although I'm pretty sure I've got it figured out now), and the title does not help me in the least...doesn't leave much other than the Brown.
I'll all for giving "clever points," but this one didn't cut it for me. To each their own I guess.
