I never knew this could happen. I stumbled upon this weird little scenario while shooting frogs 2 weekends ago:

In pic 2 that frog looks a little too darn happy with his circumstances. Eeeewwww!
Good photos though, of course. And I'll go ahead and ask cuz you know everyone will want to know... what lens did you use, technique, blah, blah, blah.

Jacko, that's the most revolting thing I've ever seen. Thanks for posting it right at dinner time. (It's 6PM here).

It's good to see you branching...well, ponding...out from the bugs for a moment. This is at least as compelling as an insect, but with a little more flavor... ;o)

Sigma 105mm F2.8 Macro. Available light. Handheld. Nothing complicated. Just a great photo opportunity. He let me get real close. I didn't want to get too close so he didn't get too stressed.
I got 1:1 macros of other frogs's eyes that day. They just sit there and don't move. I suppose they think they blend in to the terrain. I really like this one too
My first reaction when I saw him grab the other frog was to shake him so he'd let the little one go. lol. I let nature take its course.

I've never even HEARD of such a thing, let alone witnessed it, until now. Have you gotten offers from CNN for these photos? :-)

What absolutely sensational photos!!!!!!
Frog eat frog is actually quite common, though often not of their own species (puts on his biologist hat).
I had a near case last month. I found a large green tree frog (maybe 5" long) and a tiny one of the same species (under 1" long) sitting on the window ledge.
Girlfriend kept an eye on them in case they hopped off as I charged off for the camera. When I got back all she could say was ... "it ate it!" The small one had hopped past the large one and been inhaled, as the large one probably thought it was a bug.
Thankfully it spat the small one out about a minute later, unharmed.
Really amazing shots there Jacko!

Jacko, those are awesome.
I've never seen anything like it. And you captured everything perfectly.
I wish they were on DPC so I could favorite the second one, at least! Awesome shots. |

Stunning shots Jacko.
My wife is starting to hate you guys. All she hears about anymore is how much I want a 10D (or similar).
My E-10 is "OK" but hardly compares.
Thanks for sharing those superb images.

My uncle once took a photo of a fairly large bullfrog eating a chipmunk.
That has got to be the strangest thing I've ever seen... Now this photo of a frog eating a frog leaves me to believe that frogs will bring the end of this earth.... Beware ;) |

Bullfrogs will eat anything they can fit in there mouth. And it looked liek a leopard frog was the victum there. I once saw video footage of a bull frog taking a sparrow off the bank... |

That's actually pretty common. I've seen bullfrogs eating snakes turtles, and even other bullfrogs. Most frogs will try to eat anything they can fit in thier mouth. I've even seen a picture of a Argentinian Horned Frog eating a boa constrictor! Catching it on camera is pretty neat though. Nice wildlife in action pictures. |
