Photo didn't do as well as you hoped? Didn't get many (or any) comments explaining why?

I'll start:

I honestly thought I had a 6+ here:

It barely escaped just above my overall average after spending the first six days of voting at <5.6.

I do see some thing wrong...the centered subject, the centered horizon....but what else did me in? Is DPC finally tired of saturated sunsets? Is it the bird? Was my brother right?

This thing got lots of fives.

I gave it a 7, which to me means it is very good, but does not have enough impact or resonate with me enough to get one of my highest votes. Both that lighthouse and the strong sunset are things I've seen many times before in challenges.

Ok, here's mine. Abstracts are a tough sell in a non-abstract challenge, so I expected a high 4 or low 5 average out of this, and that is on target. I was disappointed however, that this average seemed mostly due to a large spike of 5's and 6's. I was trying for a "love it or hate it" entry with high and low votes cancelling each other out and I don't seem to have nailed that.

Two 2's, 9 3's? Seriously? I honestly do not understand DPC voters. I mean, sure, it's not HDR, it's not a droplet, it's not a sunset, but still. Disappointing.

Sending Grog out with a war party to find you. Don't be too concerned, however. Thag and Kron have very short attention spans.

Okay...I posted my two cents...;-)

oooh! What a great idea for a thread!!!

I left comments on the previous photos.

I'm curious about mine. It ended up with a nice score, but for the majority of the week it was sub 6. I was so excited by this capture, and the first day when it was sub-6, I thought people were crazy. The second day, I started wondering. By the 4th day of sub 6, I realized that I was really off base in my estimation, and that I was obviously missing something.

What am I missing?

Thanks!

The lighting is very flat and makes the bird look very 2 dimensional to me. A very tough shot to capture but I think the time of day (lighting) was working against you.

Thanks to all who have commented on mine. I'm seeing things now that I didn't see a week ago.

I have left comments on the others.

This is an excellent thread. So many people want feedback after the challenge, but are uncomfortable starting a thread for it.

Wonderful idea -- putting it all in one place!!

Thanks. I'm usually more of a "so be it" / "it is what it is" kind of guy, but I really thought I had nailed it. Obviously I was wrong and didn't really know why.

I didn't vote for this challenge, however, I would give you 5 as well. Reason, first time I look at the image, I can tell too much sharpening done, edges of the colors popping out. The main subject light house and the sun too much on the center for my taste, could be composed better. I like the bird touch... However, I am pretty sure it's not your subject or composition too much, it's the post processes what killed this photo.

When I checked this photo, couple things bothered me. Smoke, and the pose. You smoked her out too much... and she looks awfully uncomfortable. Look at her right foot. Also, blue light, I know you tried something unique, but you also killed it during process.

I would give you 5 for this one (didn't vote)

That's why I appreciated the thread. I never would have started one for my osprey shot -- because it ended up being a good score in a free study. But I knew that it wasn't connecting with quite a few, and I was curious why. This gave me the guts to ask -- and I'm appreciate the feedback/suggestions!

Thanks!

Yo=man, this photo has lack of interest. It can be a very nice background, but nothing is going on here honestly. I do understand it's an abstract photo, and nice colors, composition well, however it is extremely weak for a free study. My eyes are looking for a droplet LOL

...and I think that's why your score was low.

Your model is beautiful, posing is nice too... However, i would give 5 for this photo, and the reason is the lights. and i think focusing areas a little off.

Some BW photos, with similar lights are pleasant to look at, this one a little painful... burns my eyes (jokingly) side of her face too bright and right side of the whole image is too much lid then left, so I am forcing myself to look at the whole image...

I think your afford is in right track.

See, that's the point. There does not NEED to be anything going on. All it needs to be is interesting shapes, textures and colors. I may be in the minority there, in that I don't think there always has to be some greater meaning. I think you may also have missed the point that I expected a low average, but the voting curve and lack of comments tells me that is how it came off to most. Thanks.

Will go back to entering old timers with big mustaches. Maybe.

I think it's only fair to ask for my photo now... I was thinking around 6+ but didn't even get 5.9!

what did I miss?

I gave it a quick 6 and moved on. A good basic flower shot, with good lighting, but nothing about it stood out as different from any others. I'm not a floral fan, however, and if I didn't treat 6 as the average, it would have been a 5. Nothing wrong with it at all, nothing special either.

Alright, taking a stab at this:

I like the shot, however, the sky looks to be overly processed which to me takes away from the picture, the water being smooth would have been nice from a longer exposure. I liked the bird and dont see the halo everyone else seems to see.

The stockings are defiantly a big distraction, also the way her face looks I think something was over done in PP but not sure, just seems to sharp? especially around her cheeks.

I am not an abstract fan, I like the colors, but it feels over saturated to me in some areas and overly sharp in others. Nice background tho :)

Nice shot, overall I like it, I think my only dislike is the lower darks, the seem.. well I dont know, not smooth .. this is why I dont leave comments.. I suck at them! :)

Great shot, Its odd tho, as it has a washed out look to it so not much color depth, but then grainy like it was taken with a high ISO. Course, probably just a crop of a zoom in shot. I love birds in flight.

I think this is a great image, I love the colors, I love the definition and the texture.. no changes from my point of view.
