Sorry if I am being a bit thick but as a non paying member how do I know which challenges I can enter?

Hi Paul,
As a registered user, you can enter in the challenges marked "Exclusive Open." You must choose one or the other to enter, not both. There are usually two to pick from each week.

On the main page, the challenges in the left column are open for submissions. As a non-paying member, you can enter ONE of the Exclusive Open Challenges.
