Been struggling back and forth across the 5 border all day, but very few 5's. People either really like it or really don't.

I second that.

weath·ered n
–adjective
1. seasoned or otherwise affected by exposure to the weather.

I think that definition may apply to some, but I agree with you about some others.

I'm on the Australian team and three hours before roll over I still had nothing to enter.Panic stricken I shot something weathered and entered it. It meets the challenge but it's not too interesting to look at :( I had a half decent shot for landscape but as most of the shot was water I thought it didn't fit the challenge, lo and behold I go over to landscape to vote and most of the shots are of WATER!! Don't get me wrong, they are great shots and I've scored them well, but had I known I would probably be getting a much better score right now.
Our team hasn't done any collaborating or sharing of photos for advice, I kinda thought that was cheating. Anyway, I hope my team doesn't lynch me!

I started at 5.7xxx and it's been a slight drop through the day. Overall, comments very positive.

I feel okay about this one even though I thought I might have done a bit better...I guess we all do!! Steadily improving since joining dpc...that's been a bonus.

i am too pissed to post my score..I can't believe how low my score is..I had loftier hopes for this shot.

I didn't think it would win...mind you. But I never imagined this nose-dive.

This is my first time making an entry into the contest. Wow, I had no idea I'd bomb so badly. What's getting to me is I have 80 votes, an average rating in the 4s, and not one single comment.

What am I supposed to learn from this?

The other also , in a round-about-way called my entry a shoe horn.

I saw a bunch that shouldn't have been submitted to this challenge. So far I'm doing good. This is my second entry so I'll be soooo happy if I make the top 10.

Yeah, unless you have something really wrong with the photo or have a wildly great photo the comments can be sparse. This usually indicates a technically fine photo, but a subject that is a litle bland to the voters eyes. They just hit the the "4" or "5" button and move on. I think the "learning" part of this site is overstated by many folks. I still think there is lots of learning that you, the photographer, can do as a result of taking photos and thinking about what works and does not work on DPC. After the challenge you can post a thread saying "looking for comments on my submission" and 5-6 folks will usually do so.

You learn, that what you do as a photographer needs to please you and only you, to be truly happy with your image.

If you knock yourself out trying to please the masses all the time, then your photography becomes all about others and not you.

You learn not to lose sight of what made you interested in photography in the first place. That is (for me anyway) to capture an image that you find interesting and show the rest of the world why.

Not everything (barely anything) I shoot has mass appeal on this site, and that's OK with me because I have a connection with the images no matter how good or bad others think they are.

I am truly humbled when someone chooses to leave me a comment (good or bad) and even more humbled if they chose one of my images as a favorite, and I let them know by responding wit a thank you for doing so.

Photography is an art and art is personal. Grow a tough skin and stop taking it on the chin.

If you can get one person out of the thousands on this site to comment on, or choose your image as a favorite then you have done something truly wonderful with your image. You were able to show people something of the world through your eyes, and that is a truly wonderful feeling.

Just some ramblings from me (sorry if this reads like a hijack), I have been on this site for just over a year and have been 37 challenges and 15 of those are in the 4's but still I keep entering. The reason is simple, I love photography and this site is the best out there, IMHO, and the people on this site are the best and always willing to help in any way.

So I guess you should learn to reach to those you feel, on this site, are great and ask if they could give you a hand, and photograph for you because after all your the only one who really has to like what you have done.

Oh and to tie in to the thread my shot is now sitting at 5.8, Yeah, it went up:)

scrybz I hope you continue to enter for you and stick to your vision, sometimes it's easier to change how others see the world then it is to conform to the will of the masses.

All the best to you and yours.

MAX!

Good photography.

What "you" like about "your" photos are NOT enough. If you think you like your photos, and that's all matters, you will be circling around... YES, you do have to make the "mass" happy, that's photography all about, but... using your own perspective and sampling from other photos.

If you do this just for nothing, then you should be always happy and not worry about your photo doing bad in votings. You have to compete with YOURSELF against people out there and to do that is to learn what other people like and why. Most likely you are the one missing a lot, not the bunch :)

Improving yourself is not changing your style by the way. Your style reflects from your photos, all you have to do is implement the eyes of others to your own.

Keep on entering, if you learn your lesson this time, you will do better next time.

Off topic but related...
One thing I notice, particularly in non-member challenges, is a lack of basic processing and a lack of composition. Basic processing is doable, at minimum, in camera (bump contrast, saturation, and sharpening). Composition basics are easily learned through reading and observing other photographers.

When a challenge starts, I look at the other images in the challenge to see how they interpreted the challenge. I learn something here. When the challenge ends, I look at high scoring images to see what they did differently than I to score well. It could be subject, challenge interpretation, processing, composition; just about anything I can learn from. If I only used the comments I received to learn, I'd be in piss-poor shape. I also don't learn much from the score itself, only the score in relation to the scores of other photographs.

I started here in the fours. I shot images to only meet the challenge, not to expand it. Once I understood that composition plays a large part in the scoring, my scores moved to low fives. Once I understood a minimum of basic processing, they moved to mid-fives. Once I got the idea that each challenge offers an opportunity to learn something, my scores moved to the high fives and sixes. Once I got over the thoughts that my score mattered, I began to love photography.

Hi there, I'm pretty new on this site but thought I'd jump in on the conversation :)
My score is low and I don't think it's gonna go up - it's been 3,8... from the start.

The one comment I got was "It seems like you didn't even try to find a better subject..."
I only realised that you didn't see the details with the picture when the voting started (yes, I'm that new) and I guess I can see his point of view - it makes a lot more sense when you get the story behind it and without it it might not fit the theme as well as others - it could have been more weathered so to speak.
But I still really like my entry, I think it's a great photograph. Hopefully I'll get some more comments once the voting is over.
