I have nikon coolpix 775, digital, I have just bought a fujiflim finepix s602z, and I use the same smart-card in both, but I found out the hard way that the fuji uses the same starting numbers over and over, starting with 0001, after I view and delete and or send them to documents, then erase the card and then go out and take more picture's, the fuji starts with 0001 again so it replaces the old picture's with the new ones when I send that same number to documents. So I lose the old picture.
my nikon does not do this, it contiues to go up in the number of the photo. Is there a setting or what? I can go in and change the name or number manuel, so as not to replace another photo, but what a pain on 100 picture's. I'm confused!

I really don't know since I don't use smart cards but you could create a new folder each time you upload your photos to your computer and save the photos in the newly created folder.

There is no setting to change this. The only thing you can do is delete all but the last photo on the card so it continues from there. Or have a new folder for each shoot, like i do.

If you use the finepix software to upload the shots to your computer, you can make it automatically create a dated folder, and change the filenames to a date and time based system: this works fine for me. The only problem is if you upload more than once in a day - but thhen you just need to re-name the previous folder.

I've heard people comment on this before, but I've never really seen what the problem is ...

I noticed the same with my Olympus C720z - I used two cards and the numbering was the same on both, so to avoid overwriting I had to upload images to a fresh folder every time. On the other hand, Sony F717 keeps the count of pictures internally, irrespectively of the card, so there is no danger of overwriting.

I have a fuji finepix 2800Z that I use occassionally and it was frustrating when I had to keep making new folders for each card. I do know that the fuji finepix software solves that problem with a long fine number which is the date followed by the time.

Then I started using this computer that has Windows XP and the solution is right in windows, I use Windows Picture and Fax Viewer to download from the smart media and it numbers them without writing over anything.

I'm with Ed in that I've never seen where the problem is really. The finepix software does such a great job of uniquely renaming and putting your shots into dated folders that I had to write a tool for Linux to save me having to reboot into that other O/S!

Why would anybody want all their photos named 0001, 0002 anyway?

i dont have finepix installed , all i do is plug my camera and load to hard-drive and Windows XP automatically renames them.

Never had your problem!

Me neither. I've had my 602 for almost a year and taken pictures daily. The Finepix does a wonderful --and easily configurable -- job of saving my pictures into daily folders using a naming scheme that I devised. Never a problem.

The answers here are on the right track. The problem is not in the
camera but in the uploading to the computer. Your computer does not
have any way to know what your camera has stored unless there is a
software program that is configured to automatically recognize that
the input is from your camera.
Everyone should know that computers are the dumbest things in the
universe. They only know 0 and 1. Best way is to load the software
that comes with the camera and configure it to do what YOU want.
This advice is from a "computer geek" who spent most of 20 years
repairing and servicing computers.

Hey thanks you guys, I did not load the software that came with the fuji, just thought I could use what I had, and was used to, I was so mad that I lost 60 picture's, but I can re-visit the same place to re-take. Always something, so far I love this camera, still shooting in auto thou. Going to experiment with it today, see what I come up with, Big thanks to you all.
