I've recently become very fond of HDR and tried to take many shots where it would be nice to see some HDRish effects. Since I dont have a member account thing here I posted some of the photos on my blog. Please feel free to check them out :)

Those are some really great shots. Well done. There is a lot of NeatImage (or something similar on the first) which many people don't like, but I think it adds a surrealistis effect. I think my favorite is the one with the neon signs, the colors are just so vibrant. Now you have to tell us what method you use for HDR!

Thanks for your input. And you noticed the neatimage in the first one correctly. I'm usualy not a fan of overneatimaged photos either but for that one I liked how it seems a bit like it has some crazy depth of field.
When I make a HDR photo I usualy make 5 photos from -2EV for +2EV and then combine them in Photomati Pro which also allows you to tone Map. :)

Here's my first attempt at an HDR image. It sucks in my opinion, but I hope there will be many more to come soon.
Normally metered (No post processing at all):
HDR (And a lot of post processing):
The HDR image was made using "Merge to HDR" in PSCS2, and used a fairly small range from +/- 1.66EV. I will definitely try a larger range soon as I'm sure that will look a lot better than that one.

Just out of curiosity, Lucas, could you post one of those photos without HDR?

Its a good begining :) Ive never tried HDR in photoshop.
But with HDR its always better to have more photos. For day shots 3 is ok and for night shots 5 is minimum. It s also ok to go over the EV boundaries of your camera if possible :)

I think the are great. I love the perspective on them - awesome wide. What kind of lens do you use to get that wide w/your xt?
Thanks,
Todd |

Thanks for your comment. I recently aquired a Sigma 10-20mm and I used a peleng 8mm for one of the photos.

Get a "member account thing" here... its worth the $25. If you can afford a 10-22mm then you can afford the membership. |

agreed... i thought this site was neat before, but since I've had my membership I've found it to be much "neater" |

Hi Lucas... I like your shots! One question... in some of your shots, you have a surreal quality, and painterly type qualities. Is this from the "tone mapping" part of the process? Do you neat image, process, etc, etc , all the individual images in Photoshop first and then combine.... or do you combine them all and then go to photoshop? |

Here's my first HDR photo and all the steps it took for me to finally get there yesterday. I spent my whole day trying to figure it out. I do like my final result though. My HDR thread |

Didn't know where to add my comment, so I posted it here and on your blog. If you want to, you can delete it there ofcourse :)
going from left to right:
1 - I love the effect in the clouds (is this because of the different exposures or was it an effect you created in another way?) Wide angle is fantastic. Love it!
2 - To get full symmetry I'd crop the photo a bit at the right. Perfect and beautiful colors!
3 + 4 - The wide angle looks superb, again.
5 + 6 - I prefer the B&W version, but they both are a bit tilted.
Hope this is a bit helpful!

Hey guys. I worked very hard to get the money for my 10-20mm. And I think it was a good investment. But this member account. For me it really isnt worth it. I dont need the update button, I dont need space for my photos. The thing with memberships is just that they or little confomities. A Lens in turn it somehting very usefull. I hope you can understand that this is why I dont buy a membership.

Hi, Thanks for your intrest. This is my workflow:
First Rawshooter(raw conversion) -> then Photomatix(HDR image + tonemapping) -> Photoshop(though this is usualy only resize and bordering)
And that surreal quality as you say it is from the tone mapping. just try it out one time :)

Well I just tried another one and for some reason it says photomatix all over it. LoL. the last one I did in photomatix didn't do that. wow My lucky is crazy this week. I also don't enjoy what it did to the sky, but what's with the photomatix imprint?
edit. here it is:

Nice Angle and Crop :D
The photomatix Imprint only comes when you make it a HDR image by going to Generate HDR. If you use Photomatix in another way, say using the highlights and shadows technique this watermark will not appear :)

I figured it out . it's actually that since it's a trial i cant change the default settngs without the watermark appearing. the generate hdr function still works well if i dont change options. thats how i got that image in my other post. |

I haven't decided whether or not I really like most of the HDR examples I have seen. My observations are that, when used on an entire image, it creates somethign that looks rather unreal and flat as far as lighting is concerned.
I think HDR applications to certain parts of an image where it may have been lost in shadow or highlight has merit though...
In a nutshell, I'm not fond of most of the examples I see.
